BosGuy brain teaser

BosGuy riddleEach Friday morning I post a riddle or brain teaser.  The idea is to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. Share with friends or coworkers if you cannot figure out the answer and together perhaps you can determine the answer.

Post your answers in the comments section, and I’ll confirm the correct responses after lunch to give everyone a fair chance.

This week’s riddle:  A ladder hangs over the side of a ship anchored in a port. The bottom rung touches the water. The distance between rungs is 20 cm and the length of the ladder is 180 cm. The tide is rising at the rate of 15 cm each hour.

When will the water reach the seventh rung from the top?

  1. Never the ladder rises with the ship! So the bottom rung stays as is in the water as the ship also floats.

  2. Never, the boat will rise with the tide.

  3. It won’t. The ship will also rise with the tide.

  4. The water will never hit the seventh rung. Since the tide is rising and the boat is sitting on top of the water, the boat will rise as well. Never allowing the water to get past that first rung.

  5. Never. The ship will rise with the tide and take the ladder with it. this one is too easy!

  6. It won’t. The main feature of a boat is that it floats.

  7. Never. Rising tide lifts all ships. Or something like that. :)

  8. Oh good I LIEK MAF … let’s see, Pythagorean Theorem … 180 for the hypotenuse… angle of the sun …

The answer is … never! A rising tide raises all boats, including the ladders on them.

  9. Never, the ladder rises with the ship and tide
