Would you travel where it is illegal to be gay

Travel, SydneyEarlier this month, Attitude Magazine shared the results of a survey they conducted with the LGBT-friendly travel service OutOfOffice.com.  The annual survey was completed by more than 900 LGBT travelers.

One of the more interesting survey findings was that 61% of LGBT travelers would not not visit a destination where homosexuality is illegal. I have many friends who have traveled to countries where homosexuality is either illegal or if not technically illegal – still dangerous to visit. To date, Sergio and I have erred on the side of visiting places where we can safely travel but I’m curious what your thoughts are on the matter.

Would you travel to a destination where it is illegal to be gay?

  1. Several issues back Men;s Journal presented its’ subscribers with a more than inviting travel article on Jamaica. …while they didn’t print my letter taking offense with the article, I’m wondering if other subscribers might also have sent the magazine notes regarding the government’s stand on gays

  4. I prefer to travel to places where there is a high tolerance of the LGBT community. Many Caribbean countries are homophobic and it is still illegal to be gay….but their culture and people have evolved even though laws have not….I think travel here is fairly safe but like anywhere else….caution is always advised.

  5. 100% NO. NO WAY! I am not giving my hard earned cash to a place that would treat me as a criminal for who I love. PERIOD.

Rob – This is a great question and I would love to make it a WGB Question of the Day in the near future, with credit to you of course if you allow! I LOVE IT!

No. I’ve refused to go, despite great deals, because my dollars and I will not support oppression.

  8. Absolutely not. When I wanted to go on an African Safari a few years ago, we went to South Africa, for that very reason. I’d love to see the pyramids, but I can’t go to Egypt in good conscience. It’s sad, really sad.
