Earlier this week, Axios Boston shared an interesting story about a nationwide trend that is seeing more people ditch their cars and use their bikes to get around in major metro areas. Those of us who live in Boston have noticed the city’s commitment to enhancing bike safety by creating more bike lanes.
In response to this trend, Boston plans to add 9.4 miles of new bike lanes around the city. In my neighborhood, The South End, construction has been ongoing, converting Tremont Street from two lanes to one in each direction to make protected bike lanes. My assumption is this will push more car traffic onto Washington Street which is better equipped to handle the additional cars.
Urban bike-sharing programs like Boston’s Bluebikes and the growing unreliability of the city’s transportation system, MBTA are also driving many to choose cycling according to the Axios article. Regardless of the reasoning, it is a trend I like to see and hope continues to grow in popularity.
Do you use either a bike-sharing program like Boston’s Bluebikes or your own bicycle to get around town?

I own my own bike. It completely changes the way I see the city, and I love to see it becoming more accessible to more people.
Would also love to see some thicc-thighed cyclists featured here 😛
