En Vogue joins the Boston Pops for a July 4 party on the Esplanade

Tuesday evening the Boston Pops annual Fireworks Spectacular will take place with headliner, En Vogue. The tradition which started in 1929 has become a right of passage and when I first moved back to Boston, I spent more than a few July 4th holidays on the Esplanade watching these celebrations in-person. As the years have passed, I’ve moved from the Esplanade to watching the show from friends’ apartments in the Back Bay and more recently from home, which is where I think we will watch this year’s show.

If you would like to watch this from your home, The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular will be broadcast and streamed live nationally on Bloomberg TV and radio, and locally in Boston on WHDH-TV Channel 7, on Tuesday, July 4 from 8-11 P.M.

For more details about guests performing and logistics surrounding the event, visit bso.org/boston-pops-fireworks-spectacular.

Boston Public Library receives $1M gift for LGBTQ+ programming and collection

Earlier this week the Boston Public Library (BPL) announced that it had received a $1M bequest from Howard Cooper, a former resident of Dorchester.

The bequest will provide immediate-use funding to expand the current LGBTQ+ circulating collection, hire a researcher to review the Library’s historic collections for LGBTQ+ materials and hire an intern to work specifically on LGBTQ+ community history as part of the Boston Community History Project.

At a time when many communities are closing public libraries, banning books that share the stories of LGBTQ+, and threatening violence at story hours read by drag queens, this is welcome news. Perhaps it also should serve as a reminder to our community, how much of a bubble we all live.

I’m very thankful for the generous donation of the late Howard Cooper and the many others who value the role of public libraries, librarians, and those who encourage the pursuit of knowledge and learning through reading books.

LGBTQ walking tour of Boston

Are you hosting guests from out of town or planning a visit to Boston (perhaps en route to Provincetown) this summer? The LGBTQ walking tour might be an interesting suggestion for visiting guests or those unaware of the many stories the city holds for the LGBTQ community.

Boston By Foot’s walking tour shares that rich history dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries with stops at historically significant sites throughout Boston. Stops along the walking tour include a variety of bars that hosted drag shows, the AIDS Memorial Quilt, and the former site of the Napoleon Club, a gay bar where Judy Garland gave an encore performance for fans in 1967 following her final performance in Boston. The tour also educates guests about intersectionality in LGBTQ+ history.

Boston Public Radio recently shared a wonderful article about Boston By Foot’s LGBTQ history walking tour (see link in image). I’ve attached a link at the end of this post that takes you directly to the LGBTQ history tour web page if you’re interested in learning more.

The 90-minute walking tour is available for groups or private tours and meets on the front steps of the Massachusetts State House. For more information visit their website, bostonbyfoot.org.

Boston’s LGBTQ+ bars need your support now and throughout the year. Kiki Beach Boston: Season 8

A couple weeks ago the Kiki Beach Instagram account announced the start of their eighth season.

For those who are unfamiliar with this weekend tradition, eight years ago members of the LGBTQ+ community started going to one section of M Street Beach in Southie on Saturdays. Depending on the weather and week sometimes there are a handful of LGBTQ+ people and sometimes there can be a hundred or more. Over the years, Kiki Beach went from being a Saturday event to both Saturday and Sunday.

gay boston

To help you know which part of the beach the LGBTQ+ community tends to set up for Kiki Beach, check out the map below but for additional guidance, you’ll find most people between the first and second bus shelters (if you are walking away from the L Street Bath House). But when in doubt look for wherever there is a cluster of men standing, chatting, and wearing speedos.

If you will be in Boston this weekend come and check out Kiki Beach. Most people arrive after 12PM, but Sergio and I are often among the very first, arriving by 11AM.

What you need to know about 2023 Boston Pride Parade

Boston’s Pride celebration returns next Saturday, June 10th for the first time since 2019. Below is information you may find helpful about the Boston Pride Parade and other programming on Saturday.

Boston Pride Parade Route

Boston Pride Parade is Saturday, June 10th, starting at 11:00AM

The Boston Pride Parade route is similar to year’s past, starting in Copley Square and working through part of Boston’s South End before walking up through the top of Back Bay and concluding at the Boston Common.

Club Cafe typically hosts huge pride celebrations before, during, and after the parade for those coming from out of town and looking for a ‘home base’. However, the entire neighborhood embraces this celebration, and establishments including Kartal Boston (formerly Boston Eagle) have indicated they will be hosting a large Pride celebration party during the parade as well.

Chandler Street Block Party, gay boston

Other events scheduled for next Saturday include:

Post Parade Festival @City Hall (starts at 12PM)

Chandler Street Block Party from 2-8PM ($20 donation for entry)

ESME LGBTQ+ Women’s Block Party (it’s moved to Back Bay)

PRIDE Show w/ Baby Tate, COBRAH, & Detox at Roadrunner

Guest DJ Alex Costa joins Boston Gay Mafia at Royale

“Day of DJs” at Club Cafe

More events will be added. Be sure to check out this week’s “What To Do” post which is published each Thursday at 12PM. Also bookmark the organizers website, bostonprideforthepeople.org.

2023 Shakespeare on the Common: Macbeth

Photo from CSC website

CSC Presents Macbeth on the Boston Common
July 19 – August 6, 2023
All performances are free and open to the public

One of my favorite summer traditions in Boston is attending one of the free performances by the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) on the Boston Common.

I understand that Shakespeare can be difficult to read, but the CSC productions are always fun to watch and a great way to enjoy an evening outdoors with friends or as a date with someone special. Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s better-known tragedies, but if you’re unsure what the story is about visit the CSC website for a brief overview.

While the performances remain free, due to the popularity of these performances, advanced registration is strongly recommended for ease of arrival and priority access to seating. You can bring your own blankets and chairs, but you can also rent chairs online in advance or on-site for $10. All shows start at 8PM with the exception of August 5th which starts at 6PM.

For more information about the programming or the CSC, visit the Commonwealth Shakespeare Co. website.
