Boston theater company fall productions

At the close of each summer, I like to promote local theater comanies and their upcoming fall productions to remind people of the vibrant (and underrated) theater community here in Boston. I hope this post will encourage you to support Boston’s local theater community. One advantage of supporting these theater companies is that ticket prices are more affordable than the national touring companies that come through Boston.

Below I’ve shared 2023/2024 season opening productions of several (not all) Boston theater companies. The shows are listed in order of opening dates and include links for more information.

Central Square Theater || Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes
September 7 – October 8, 2023

The Huntington || Prayer for the French Republic
September 7 – October 8, 2023

The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) || The Half-God of Rainfall
September 8 – September 24, 2023

Boston Lyric Opera || Madama Butterfly
September 14 – September 24, 2023

SpeakEasy Stage || POTUS: Or Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying To Keep Him Alive
September 15 – October 15, 2023

Lyric Stage Company || Assassins
September 15 – October 15, 2023

Tickets to these shows make for a great ‘date night’ or night out with friends. Make plans now to catch a show later this fall. You’ll have a great time and your support will mean everything to these very worthy, local theater companies.

Big Mx Steak casting call

Ingenue Drag Pageantry – Applications due August 18

Boston drag performer, Missy Steak is teaming up with Boston Gaymers, a local LGBTQ+ social group for gamers to host The Big Mx Steak pageant, which will take place on September 7th.

The pageant is looking for 5 contestants who would like to share their drag debut on stage at Club Cafe to compete for the title of Big Mx Steak. Contestants will participate in a Q&A in Swimsuits, a talent show, and a lipsync smackdown. This pageant will be unlike any you’ve ever seen; where a mess can be success and perfection is out of the question. Make the best of your mistakes and channel your inner drag queen. To participate, your application must be submitted by Friday, August 18th.

Boston Gaymers: Queer Board Game Night

Did you know that each Monday the LGBTQ+ social group Boston Gaymers meet at Club Cafe for their weekly Queer Board Game Night?

The event has grown in popularity and seating is assigned based on tickets sold so if you are coming with a friend or group, it is recommended that you purchase tickets for your entire party rather than individually. This will help ensure you can sit together. Additionally, organizers recommend larger groups arrive 30 minutes early to ensure you can find seating together.

If you’d like to attend this week’s Queer Board Game Night on Monday, July 31, please RSVP (there is a $5 fee per reservation).

You can learn more about this social group by visiting their website, bostongaymers.com.

Barbie Beach Party – July 29

C’MON BARBIE LET’S GO PARTY

Boston’s Men of Melanin Magic are bringing Barbiemania to M Street Beach with a takeover of Kiki Beach on Saturday, July 29. For those unfamiliar with where to go on M Street Beach, the pink bathing suits should be a good clue, but I’ve also included directions on where the Kiki takes place.

✨👙 WEAR PINK👙 ✨

Help the Men of Melanin Magic figure out how many Barbies plan to come to this week’s beach party by RSVP’ing below (it’s free).

How to find Kiki Beach on M Street Beach

If you’re unfamiliar with Kiki Beach, or if it has been a while since you’ve last gone, check out the image below. It shows where you’re likely to find your fellow LGBTQ+ friends at M Street Beach. Most guys set up between the first and second bus shelter (walking away from the L Street Bath House).

Also if you need a place to change or to use public restrooms, the L Street Bath House is open after an extensive renovation.

Boston LGBTQ+ library in the works

Axios reported last week that Boston could soon get its first nonprofit library created by and for LGBTQ+ locals. This is great news and one that bucks a national trend where almost every week one can find a story in the news about LGBTQ+ books being banned or libraries (and librarians) coming under fire for hosting LGBTQ+ events.

QT Library aims to create a space for all ages to enjoy books, art, LGBTQ+ culture, and contributions. To date, more than 75 volunteers have joined QT’s core eight-person team to help launch the library and while an exact location for their brick-and-mortar library is still in the making, they hope to find a space that is within the city limits that will open in the summer of 2024.

If you would like to support this initiative, you can join their Kickstarter campaign. They have already exceeded their first-round goal to raise more than $50,000 by July 31, 2023, but they could still use your support.

You can follow their progress and learn more about the organization by visiting their website, QT Library.

Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show tickets on sale

Even though it is the height of summer, tickets to see Jinkx Monsoon and Ben DeLaCreme’s annual holiday show went on sale earlier this week. The duo has worked up a brand new edition of this annual show which comes to Boston each year.

Make plans with friends for a fun night out in November and purchase your tickets before this sells out.

Reminder: 2023 Shakespeare on the Common starts this week

One of my favorite summer traditions in Boston is attending one of the free performances by the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) on the Boston Common.

This year’s play, Macbeth, is one of Shakespeare’s better-known tragedies, but if you’re unsure what the story is about visit the CSC website for a brief overview. While I recognize Shakespeare can be difficult to read, watching the CSC production brings the bard’s words to life so even if the language can sound foreign, it is easier to understand what is happening.

Enjoy an evening outside with friends or a date with someone special. We typically pack wine and charcuterie (you can get what you need at the nearby Roche Bros in Downtown Crossing but I like to make and pack it at home). While public drinking is a no-no, as long as you are discreet, nobody will bother you.

While the performances remain free, due to the popularity of these performances, advanced registration is strongly recommended for ease of arrival and priority access to seating. You can bring your own blankets and chairs. You can also rent chairs online in advance or on-site for $10. All shows start at 8PM with the exception of August 5th which starts at 6PM.

For more information about the programming or the CSC, visit the Commonwealth Shakespeare Co. website.
