Eu amo Buzios, Brazil

Sergio and I returned from a 2+ week trip to Brazil. We flew to his hometown of Belo Horizonte the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. On Saturday, November 25th flew from Belo Horizonte to Cabo Frio (approximately a 1-hour flight) and then drove to Buzios to spend 5 nights with a friend who joined us from Provincetown.

Armação dos Búzios more commonly referred to as Búzios, is a small town located about 2 hours by car from Rio de Janeiro. The quaint town became a popular destination with affluent Brazilians, Argentinians, and Europeans after the French actress Brigitte Bardot visited in 1964. As a result, you’ll find (in addition to the Brigitte Bardot sculpture) many establishments named after the actress as a nod to her.

The peninsula of Buzios has more than 20 beaches ranging from praia João Fernandes to praia Tartaruga, but Sergio and I really enjoy the tiny beach, praia Azedinha. The clothing-optional beach, Olho de Boi Beach, is a tiny V-shaped beach and a favorite destination for many gay tourists.

In addition to the beaches and beautiful views, at night, Rua das Pedras, the town’s main street, is full of galleries, shops, restaurants, and bars which stay open late into the evening. Below are some photos from our visit to Buzios, Brazil.

If you are planning a trip to Brazil and have included time in Rio de Janeiro, you may want to consider spending 1-2 nights in Buzios. The drive takes 2 hours (without traffic). The most affordable way to get to Buzios is via regular buses. A more comfortable ride can be arranged via car service or with Uber. We paid 550 Brazilian Reais (approximately $115 US dollars for a driver to take us from Buzios to Rio).

Feel free to hit me up with any questions should you plan a trip here or to Brazil.

  1. I have actually been to Praia Olho de Boi. A scenic and rather small, secluded bit of paradise. It’s a short hike from Praia Brava which can be accessed by taxi from Buzios. I taxied out and walked back (an easy distance) to Buzios harbor to rejoin my cruise ship.
