According to a new AP article nearly 132,000 gay couples report they are now married. U.S. Census figures released earlier this week offer a snapshot of married and unmarried same-sex couples in the U.S. based on the government count conducted last year, when gay marriage was legal in five states and D.C.
The Census Bureau originally reported that there were slightly more than 900,000 gay couples in the US but recently revised that number downward to just under 650,000 due to a coding error that initially exaggerated the count. However, researchers believe the new estimate could be as much as 15 percent lower than the actual number of gay couples in the U.S. because of social stigma, discrimination or other concerns about confidentiality.
