Last weekend I had the opportunity to see SpeakEasy Stage’s production of The Color Purple. This musical is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg.
While watching a musical about a poor African-American woman living in the South in the 1930s may not be the first thing you think of when planning a night out, trust me – you are going to love this show. The SpeakEasy Stage has assembled a large, talented cast that belt out amazing music and draw you in, making the time fly. As you might expect, the show runs the emotional gamut and provides ample fodder for conversation later. For my more shallow readers, the incredibly handsome Jared Nixon (shown below) might be sufficient motivation.
