The miraculous Saint Anthony

Catholic PriestI’m not a particularly religious individual nor am I superstitious, but I was raised Roman Catholic and there are some traditions from my childhood that have stuck.  Catholics are taught to pray to different patron saints and while I rarely pray – whenever I lose something I still immediately turn to Saint Anthony.

Despite the irrationality of praying to a saint from the 1200s, it is hard for me to think of an instance where Saint Anthony hasn’t come through so why wouldn’t I keep praying?

St. Anthony, St. Anthony please look around.

I’ve lost my <Insert Object> and it needs to be found.

Which is why I’m writing this post, because I promised Saint Anthony I would, and since I know I’ll be in need of his services in the future, no matter how crazy it sounds, I don’t want to wreck what has been an amazingly helpful relationship for 40+ years.

St. Anthony resolves the mystery of BosGuy’s missing keys

On Tuesday, September 16th I flew to Texas for a business trip and unbeknownst to me, I lost my keys when I went through security. I didn’t realize this until the following Monday, after which I proceeded to search all the nooks and crannies of my travel bag, pants pockets, jackets, and even our car.  By Tuesday I was feeling pretty down and decided to give “Tony” — that’s how I affectionately refer to Saint Anthony — a call by reciting my prayer over and over. The next morning when I woke up I recalled that going through security in Logan Airport had resulted in some of my contents getting jostled so I called TSA Logan Airport Lost and Found and I spoke to Officer Tony. In less than a few minutes Officer Tony told me he had keys matching my description and I could come by to pick them up at my convenience.  Thank you St. Anthony.

  1. Oh, this was great!

Personally, I AM a Happily-Recovered-Catholic, but in spite of that, I have come to love working with Saints. In fact, I had a Spiritual Teacher who, being Puerto Rican, always praised “San Antonio!”

Over the years, I have needed to be a bit more forceful with Saint Anthony (I have it on good authority that he likes it rough), so one time, I threatened to take the baby out of his arms if he did not help me find something I had misplaced. I do not think he realized just how serious I was until I began ripping up an image of him holding the baby.

After that, no, he did not help me find the item faster, although now he knows I mean BUSINESS!

In fact, one time I was asking Saint Anthony to help me with a personal matter and a Saint Anthony taxi company car drove by. I have lived in my municipality all my life, and never knew there was a Saint Anthony Cab Company.

BosGuy, thank you so much for sharing this. I AM having a great day, and this made it all the more sweet.

  3. Ha ha, here in Brazil is Saint Longinus, the saint we pray for a miss object: “São Longuinho, São Longuinho, se eu achar (nome do objeto perdido) dou três pulinhos”. In english is not funy: “St Longino, St Longino, if I found – insert object – I will give 3 litle jumps”. Ask this to Sérgio.

  4. Nice-I was raised Catholic but rarely go except for weddings & funerals… but for some reason I still fall back on St Anthony and St Jude… old habits die hard. 😉

  6. And of course I share the saints name. Yeah, I was raised and attended Catholic Schools for my first 12 years of schooling. I’m a big old atheist now.
