More coffee houses opening in South End

south end, troyLast week the Ink Block announced that a new Capital One 360 Bank and Cafe would be opening soon to which I tweeted in response: Capital One 360 Cafe Ink BlockThe fact that Capital One has concluded (ahead of much of their competition) that banks are not exactly loved by everyone so they’ve started including coffee shops is a smart marketing move on their part but it is hard for me to cheer for another bank to open – even if that section of the neighborhood is underserved.

So I’d like to champion the news that a coffee shop, CUPPACOFFEE, (without the added baggage of a bank) will be opening in the Troy at 55 Traveler Street possibly as early as mid March.  CUPPACOFFEE is an Australian coffee house which means they will also sell Aussie foods like meat pies, lamingtons, anzac cookies and other treats.

  1. I agree with your sentiment – far too many “branches” — the Capital One concept is not really all that new – Citibank has the beast by Park Street.

What it is they are selling is the option to traditional banking at a branch – right now most consumers pinch their nose closed walk in and do the transaction.

They, like me, prefer the ATM – it is more convenient and it comes without both the actual or implied attitude of an associate who is being UNDER paid a a front line representative of the brand.

Drop in – have a cup of coffee — in a real, dedicated location in the branch –changes the game a bit People’s United Bank almost pulls this off – they have a focus on smaller -physically- branches fully staffed. They also have extended banking hours based on geography – of the clients who live in a X mile radius.
