I heard about this town on a Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me podcast and had to check it out for myself. The Austrian town actually pronounces the word as Foo-King.
Normally I write about places I’ve visited but if anyone has actually been to this tiny Austrian village, please let me know. I’d love to post a photo of you posing in front of this hilarious town name.

For the record, the person who mentioned the town on the radio (and took a selfie in front of the sign) is Australian so it seems many English speakers find the sign funny – not just your fellow countrymen.

Yes, I’ve actually been there, and it is a real village. It was written up in the paper there because stupid Americans kept stealing their village signs, and they had to start ordering them by the dozen. I lived in Austria for over seven years, and stories like this make me ashamed of my countrymen. The village had its name long before it was an American “dirty word (giggle, giggle…)” and no, I didn’t take my picture in front of the sign… It doesn’t mean the same thing in German. Those stealing the signs should show some respect.
