MA same sex marriage stats paint a positive picture

same sex marriageWith the U.S. Supreme Court expected to rule on the future of same-sex marriage in the US in the coming weeks, The Boston Herald published an interesting article from the AP which suggested the justices should consider the MA experience where marriage equality first arrived in the US back in 2004.

Between 2004 and 2013 more than 25,o00 gay couples married in MA, according to a review of state records; accounting for approximately 7% of all marriages in the state. Marriage is more popular with lesbian couples (16,000 weddings) than gay couples (9,900 weddings).   And despite predictions that “gay marriage” would destroy the institution of marriage, Massachusetts has maintained a divorce rate of 2.7%; one of the lowest rates of any state in the country.
