zayre, filene’s, ames, service merchandise, bradlees, jordan marsh, a.j.wright – 5 of these were in the philly area.
we too have lost many department stores – wanamakers, strawbridge & clothier, gimbels, lits, snellenburgs, korvettes, nichols, two guys, woolworths, mccrory, bambergers, peebles, w.t.grant, j.j.newberry, bonwit teller, nan duskin, hill’s, etc.
around here, the only stores we have left are sears (on its last legs), penney’s (ditto), macy’s, kohl’s. then you have the expensive stores, like neimans/saks/bloomingdales.
and then there’s wall-fart; you can’t pay me to go in there (shudders).
two local stores that ARE still doing well here are boscov’s and bon-ton.
