Over the past several weeks I’ve had two business trips to San Francisco; each lasting a week. Unfortunately when I travel for work I have little spare time to enjoy myself, but one week ago when I was wandering through Chinatown I stumbled upon this restaurant. I didn’t end up going in but I’ve been chuckling about it ever since. Hope it brings a smile to you.

I’m a BraMex married to an American linguist teacher. He comes home with jokes told by foreign students about their respective countries. Sometimes, I find these jokes racist, especially when he apes their accents. But, his career is helping them remove their accents and teaching them English grammar.
I’ve heard similar jokes on TV sitcoms, “Fresh Off the Boat”, “Modern Family” and “AbFab”.
There is no place for being politically correct in humor, and stretching boundaries is a part of humor. I’m sure the owners of this restaurant are intelligent and understood the outcome.
No, I’m not a Mexican transvestite.

I’m Chinese and I’m telling you it’s hurtful. I don’t think you want the publicity your blog is about to get over this racism. Apologize now.

If I thought it was racist I would have never posted it in the first place. If you have an issue with it perhaps you should call the owners. I disagree with you and I’m not bothered by your offense.

You’re “not bothered” that you’ve hurt a member of the very group you’re mocking with your tasteless and racist joke? Glad to hear it. Your refusal to acknowledge how racist you’re being is unreal.

You seem to expend a lot of energy here.

This post has more comments than any of your other recent ones and ALL of them are telling you it’s a racist joke. Just own it and apologize. I’m really surprised you can’t see how obviously racist it is.

Nope, it’s not like Connah, it’s just racist. Harrow is a farm-to-table restaurant (http://www.harrowsf.com/), the name of which is likely a British reference. Based on the location of the restaurant, you imposed your own prejudices. And then chuckled about them. One hopes you will own this, but my hunch is we’ll soon see another petulant “don’t read my blog” reply.

First I appreciate it when people leave comments regardless of whether I agree with them or not. You are entitled to your comments and provided they aren’t riddled with profanity I think I’ve always approved every comment I’ve received.
Second, the restaurant is located is in the middle of Chinatown – not exactly imposing prejudices when you think of the context, but you are entitled to continue to think so.

Nope. You’re entitled to your opinion but I disagree. If you feel that strongly I suggest you stop visiting my blog. I won’t be offended by your being offended.

That’s kind of racist, don’t you think?

It didn’t strike me that way. It sort of reminded me of the North End “Connah” Store here in Boston, http://bostoniano.info/business/north-ends-connah-store/
