Vintage gay

Check out the ashtray next to the American flag. Not something you’re likely to see (at least around these parts). When do you think this might have been taken? I”m going to guess the 1970s or 1980s.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at

  1. This photo looks familiar. I am pretty sure these two guys were profiled in the book “The Gay Crusaders” about early leaders of the gay lib movement. It was published in 1972 and I must of stumbled across it a few years later as a teen. I looked it up online and there were two male couples profiled in the book but the photos I found did not identify them. One couple looks just like these two. Anyone else read this book. It was a tremendous positive influence for me coming out in the 70’s.

  2. Marty Robinson (dark hair) and Tom Doer
    1969-1970. The were lovers.
A founder of GLF right after Stonewall…then GAA the same year.
I worked with them on nonviolent disruptions all over NYC.
