Boston proposes new green space over the Mass Pike for the South End and Chinatown

Parcel 21: Between Washington & Shawmut Streets

Last week the Streets Blog had an article about the city of Boston using Federal funds to expand green space in the South End and Chinatown neighborhoods to cover the I-90 trench that divides the two neighborhoods. Considering the large number of sizeable residential buildings that now abutt Herald Street and the ongoing development, I take this as great news.

According to the article, funds will be used to convert four blocks of the I-90 trench, from Arlington and Tremont Streets in the west to Harrison Avenue in the east with a goal to reconnect these communities. Initial efforts will focus on building over Parcel 21 (shown above) to create open space with intentions to prepare design guidelines for the remaining parcels.

This decision marks a departure from city planning which for nearly 50 years has looked to private investment to build over the I-90 trench. Who can say if this new focus on stitching these neighborhoods together will materialize (this is Boston after all), but I’m heartened by the change in policy, because both the South End and Chinatown desperately need more green space.

I hope there will also be an effort to include tennis and basketball courts. The influx of residential buildings in this part of the city has put a huge strain on the only sizeable park in the area, Peter’s Park, which is nearly always at capacity.

Norse Atlantic comes to Logan Airport

Norse Atlantic is a new lowcost European carrier that started flying in 2022. Last week, the airline announced new flights between Gatwick / London and several US cities that will begin later this year. The flights between Boston and Gatwick in London are scheduled to start on September 1, 2023.

  • Boston (BOS): 5x weekly (starts Sep. 1)
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL): 3x in May/June, 4x after (starts May 26)
  • Los Angeles (LAX): Daily (starts June 30)
  • New York (JFK): Daily
  • Orlando (MCO): 4x weekly in May/June, daily after (starts May 25)
  • San Francisco (SFO): 3x weekly (starts July 1)
  • Washington, D.C. (IAD): 6x weekly (starts June 1)

The airline exclusively flies a fleet of new Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Current one way fares available from JFK to Gatwick begin at $165. Hopefully Boston will see fares like this when Norse Atlantic begins flying from Logan in September.

A (New) Boston Pride returns June 10, 2023

On Thursday this week, the newly formed organization, Boston Pride for the People, announced that the Boston Pride parade and festival will return on Saturday June 10th. The celebrtions will take place on the Boston Common and at City Hall Plaza with additional activities planned for the preceding week and throughout the month of June.

More details will follow in the weeks / months to come but the organization is looking for volunteers and has put out a call to ask for interested members of the community to visit, bostonprideforthepeople.org, to learn more.

Inviting LGBTQ+ owned businesses to apply for NGLCC small business grants

NGLCC COMMUNITY IMPACT GRANT PROGRAM

Applications are now open for local businesses to receive grants as part of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) Community Impact Grant Program. This grant program is in partnership with the Massachusetts LGBT Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Grubhub Community Fund.

To be eligible for the Community Impact Grant, applicants must:

  • Be an LGBTQ+-owned or LGBTQ+ ally-owned restaurant, bar, or café that serves food.
  • Provide proof that you are an LGBTQ+-owned or allied establishment.

Grants are expected to range from $10,000 to $25,000, but to be eligible applications must be submitted on or before Tuesday, February 14, 2023. For more information contact Thaís De Marco.

Playland, one Boston’s most notorious queer bars, is now a movie – but when will it show in Boston

Boston’s Playland Café first opened in The Great Depression (in 1937). The space became one of Boston’s most notorious queer bars, known for attracting a diverse clientele from all over the city. It would close 60+ years later in 1998 after it lost its entertainment license. The debut film by Georden West, an Emerson University graduate, is creating a lot of buzz and will premiere tomorrow at the Rotterdam’s International Film Festival.

Hopefully this film will make its way back across the Atlantic and have a screening here in Boston. I’ll be certain to share more when I learn of a confirmed date.

The film, Playland, is set up as a series of dreamlike interactions capturing moments over the bars 60+ years from the bar’s cooks, waiters, bartenders and drag performers, starting in the the late 1930s and running through the mid-’90s, building narrative with each additional story. West’s use of archival footage of the bar and its surrounding neighborhood, Boston’s Red Light district called the Combat Zone, adds nostalgia, recalling a time when Boston was far less affluent and a much more gritty city.

Boston Gay Mens Chorus ambitous outreach program documentary: Music Triumphs Homophobia

Pardon while I brag a bit about the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus (BGMC) which recently released a new 2 hour documentary that shares the positive impact BGMC has had in fighting homophobia here in the US and around the world through the power of their music and making their presence known.

The documentary, “Music Triumphs Homophobia,” shares the impact BGMC has had in recent years, traveling to and performing in places openly hostile to the LGBTQ+ community, like Poland, Turkey, and South Africa. I promise you’ll feel moved and inspired by the work this organization has done when you watch the documentary’s two minute trailer.
