I love this week’s photo. Based on their dress, I’m assuming this was taken somewhere in the west but I really have no clue as to when or where this may have been taken. Anyone care to take a guess?
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. We all deserve to feel this way and waking up from a nap or night of sleep in the arms of someone you love is the best kind of way to wake up.
Arthur Laurents (July 14, 1917 – May 5, 2011) shown above on the right was an American playwright, stage director and screenwriter best known for his work on Broadway, including – West Side Story, Gypsy, and La Cage Aux Folles. Tom Hatcher (August 24, 1929 – October 26, 2006) shown on the left was an aspiring actor whom Gore Vidal suggested Arthur Laurents seek out at the Beverly Hills men’s clothing store Hatcher was managing at the time. The couple remained together for 52 years until Hatcher’s death on October 26, 2006.

Thursday April 2nd the U.S. government (sort of) eased restrictions that previously forbid gay men and several other groups from making blood donations. The FDA’s policy change is not absolute, meaning the guidance for male donors who would have been deferred for having sex with another man has changed the recommended deferral period from 12 months to 3 months. For sexually active gay men, which describes every gay man I know – this change although welcome still falls short. You can read the details about the new policy which aims to allow tens of thousands more Americans to give blood here.
The change in policy is due to canceled blood drives, that have decimated donations to the American Red Cross and other nonprofits that provide most of the blood supply in the country.
For those of you who are not sexually active gay men, consider contacting your local American Red Cross. To learn more and or to schedule a blood donation at Boston’s American Red Cross donation center call 1-800-RED CROSS or go online to schedule a time to donate, here.
Michael Lebrecque a.k.a. the mastermind behind Boston’s successful “Heels for Hope” has come up with a creative pop up fundraiser to facilitate social interaction and to help spread some love and support for BAGLY, an organization that has been helping LGBTQIA youth for 40 years.
MAKE A DONATION TO BAGLY TODAY
Heels at Home Challenge:
1.) Take a picture of you at home in your Heels an post on social media
2.) Be sure to tag your friends and challenge them to do the same
Make a micro-donation of $5, $10, $15 to BAGLY if you can. The isolating feeling you may be feeling due to the state’s shelter in place order is how many LGBTQIA youth feel everyday if it weren’t for BAGLY’s services.
This week’s photo is from the fun to follow IG account, @kiltedbros. Definitely an eye-catching pose as he grips his sporran and smirks for the camera.
Much thanks to Peter from NY for emailing me another great photo for my weekly vintage gay post. This photo dates back to the 1880s/90s and it looks like quite the house party.
