gay hollywood

It was Rock Hudson’s death that ultimately galvanized Hollywood and Elizabeth Taylor in particular to put a spotlight on the AIDS epidemic. I shudder to think how much longer it would’ve gone unchecked without such a famous and “masculine” person succumbing to the virus.

President Reagan’s lack of sympathy and homophobic policies hardened my heart even though I was still in the closet and made me realize, the party of Reagan could never be my party. Though it pains me to say it, I hope Reagan is still burning in hell for what he did – or to be more precise, what he didn’t do.

Above is a photo of Rock at the prime of his life with his lover, Lee Garlington.

Here is a photograph of a young Truman Capote resting his head on his lover and partner, Jack Dunphy. My guess would be that this dates back to the late 40s or possibly in the early 1950s. Anyone know more about this picture?

This photo really struck me because according to the University of Wisconsin-Madison archives where this photo is from it depicts two men (one in drag) from the 1930s. Some may not realize that it was illegal to dress in drag at that time and one risked being arrested for cross-dressing in the US at that time.

Photos: Ross William Hamilton/The Oregonian

The photo above is of Eric Marcoux and Eugene Woodworth who first met in Chicago in 1953. Woodworth was a ballet dancer, and Marcoux was just leaving a Trappist monastery. The couple is probably best known for Woodworth marrying his longtime companion after he had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and given only weeks to live. At the time Oregon didn’t recognize same sex marriages so they married in Washington at Clark County Courthouse.

I dedicate this weekly post to men like Eric and Eugene. Do you have a photograph you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Above is a photo of two men enjoying what looks like a fairly passionate kiss and embrace. I’m going to guess this was taken in the 1940s, but honestly have no idea. Anyone else think they know when this photo might have been taken?

louis halsey and john spofford

This week’s vintage gay photograph is of Louis Halsey and John Spofford who were married in New York City in November of 2011 after having been together for 64 years. They look quite dapper in the more current photo and both were very good looking in their photo from more than five decades earlier.

gay couple cuddlingI love this photo because the two men seem to be enjoying themselves as they cuddle for a photo outside. I can’t imagine they can be all that comfortable in their three piece suits but they seem quite at home in each other’s arms.

marlon brando, james dean, kissing, gay hollywoodIn some ways, this photo runs counter to what this weekly post is all about – featuring men who were together at times in the past when being gay was actually illegal and relatively unsafe. However, with all the rumors that have swirled around these two Hollywood heart throbs, I couldn’t resist.

This weeek’s photo came from the Daily Mail in the UK and suggested the photograph was taken in the 180os. I think they look quite happy together.
