Dirk Bogarde and Anthony Forwood were a couple for more than 50 years. Dirk was an incredibly successful actor and Anthony was his manager. The first photo looks as if it may have been taken in the 1950s and the second showing Anthony on the left and Dirk on the right was taken in the 1980s before Forward died in May of 1988. You can learn more about this interesting pair here.

The painters Jared French and Paul Cadmus were lovers who began to experiment with a camera along with Margaret French during summers on the beaches of Fire Island and Provincetown. Their work was never wholly accepted by the Art establishment. You can learn more about this interesting pair here.

Shown above are Jean Cocteau & Jean Marais taken in Cote d’Azur in 1939. Cocteau and Marais are sometimes referred to as the first modern gay couple. You can learn more about this interesting pair here.

Ned Warren and John Marshall, 1895 – Boston, MA

Edward Perry Warren, better known as Ned Warren, was an American art collector and the author of works proposing an idealized view of homosexual relationships. Ned commissioned an “anatomically enhanced” version of Rodin’s The Kiss (Le Baiser), telling the sculptor that he wanted the male figure to have a prominent penis. Although earlier versions of this statue did not feature a visible male sex organ, Rodin happily complied. This sculpture, turned down by museums in America for being too explicit, now resides at London’s Tate Gallery.

Oscar Wilde with his lover Sir Alfred Douglas circa 1893 before their trial

This week’s post features one of my favorite writers of all time, Oscar Wilde, with his lover, Sir Alfred Douglas before Oscar was imprisoned for “gross indecency”. Whatever our issues are today, we have it far easier than those who came before us, and I always make it a point to remind myself how lucky I am.
