NOM protester from anti-gay marriage rally from 2010
On Monday in Maine the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) released confidential documents from the National Organization for Marriage (NOM). These documents were shared as evidence in Maine’s ongoing ethics investigation into NOM’s campaign finances.
According to the articles from TruthWinsOut.org and Human Rights Campaign these documents were part of a continuing investigation by the state of Maine. The court-ordered disclosure shows how NOM’s strategy and tactics are racially and ethnically divisive and filled with false political calculations.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, personal opinions may vary on the morality of sexual identity / orientation, but legally everyone must be treated fairly under the law. A law that restricts the freedoms of one group over another will eventually find itself on the wrong side of history, and those opposing same sex marriage will be remembered by history with scorn.

There are LGBT people who opopse gay marriage. If Stonewall set out to promote the the opinions of all LGBT people they’d soon find they had set themselves an impossible task. There are many different strands to LGBT equality and each individual LGBT person puts a different priority on each of them. If stonewall are content to pick up _any_ of these strands and further them then I value their work. Energy can be directed at attacking the establishments and individuals making concerted efforts to ensure no strands are picked up at all. To see this energy direced at attacking an organsiation helping further equalty strands, and not at those directly opposing them, makes me rather sad.

The biggest concern in my mind is that most folks confuse legal marriage with holy matrimony.
No one member of our society should prevent another from entering into a legal partnership of any kind, including marriage.
Holy Matrimony is an entirely different matter and has its own set of rules. If a religion only sanctions heterosexual marriage, then that is fine–for that religion’s congregation only, not for anyone else.
Religious law and secular law are two entirely different issues. Let’s strive to keep them separate.

Seeing the passage from Leviticus again reminds me… I mean, it says “also” lie with mankind as he lieth with a woman. I don’t lieth with a woman so I can’t “also” lie with mankind. So, you see, it’s only bisexuality that’s forbidden in the bible. 😉
But seriously, I’m enjoying watching what I hope will be NOM’s demise. A hateful bunch, they are.

I’m optimistic that this recent news will be one of many nails in NOM’s coffin in the coming months. This should signal the beginning of their end. I won’t be surprised if a few of the leaders end up in prison.
