BosGuy brain teaser

Each Friday morning I post a riddle or some sort of brain teaser. This week’s challenge will require you to use your Left brain, but I’m confident you will be able to get this week’s teasah.

You are provided with a 3 gallon and 5 gallon jug. You need to measure out exactly 7 gallons of water. How would you do that?

I’ll post the answer or validate correct responses later in the day. You can respond by leaving a comment or Tweeting me at @BosGuy.

  2. Since I’m late, I will provide an alternative:
    1. Fire the idiot who brought you a 3 and 5 gallon jug when you distinctly told him you needed 7 gallons.
    2. Hire someone else who knows how to follow instructions.
    3. Delegate.

  3. measure out 2 of the five gallon jugs, and then from the 10 gallon, measure out one 3 gallon. That will leave you exactly with 7 gallons.

  4. For those who responded:
Fill up the 5 gallon once and use the water.
Fill up the 5 gallon again, then pour enough out to fill the 3 gallon, and use the remaining 2 gallons to make a total of 7.

    Or any variation of that.

And yes, this was a riddle in Die Hard.

  6. Wasnt this in a Die Hard movie?? Take the 5 Gallon Jug – fill it – with the water in the 5 gallon jug – fill the 3 gallon jug and then dump that out. Put the remaining 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug in the 3 gallon jug and then fill the 5 gallon jug again and you have a perfect 7 gallon total!!

  7. Easy. Use the 5 gallons in the 5 gallonn jug. Then fill it again and pour 3 gallons of it into the 3 gallon jug. You now have 2 gallons left over to add to the 5 to make 7.

  8. Fill the 5 gallon jug, pour it into the 3 gallon jug until the 3 gallon is full, leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug. Empty the 3 gallon jug out. Pour the remaining 2 gallons from the 5 gallon into the empty 3 gallon jug. Then fill the 5 gallon. You now have 7 gallons.

  9. Fill the 5 gallon jug. Pour water from 5 gallon jug into 3 gallon jug (leaving 2 gallons in 5 gallon jug). Empty 3 gallon jug and fill with the 2 gallons left in the 5 gallon jug. Fill the 5 gallon jug again. Voila. 7 gallons.

  10. 1. Fill the 3 gallon container.
    2. Using that pour the 3 gallons into the 5 gallon container.
    3. Mark the water level in the 5 gallon container.
    4. Fill the remaining space in 5 gallon container.
    5. Pour into empty 3 gallon container (from 5 gallon) until water level goes down to previous mark.
    6. The 3 gallon container will be filled with 2 gallons of water.
    7. Refill the balance of the 5 gallon container (5+2=7)
