Queerty recently posted The World’s 10 Best Gay Beaches. While I don’t take these sort of lists seriously, I do find them entertaining and I’m assuming you do too. Interestingly, I’ve only been to four of the ten named beaches which span the globe. Which of these beaches have you been to?
I’ve been to the beaches asterisked, and although some are nicer than others, I’ve enjoyed all of them. I’m surprised San Francisco’s clothing optional Baker Beach didn’t make the list. What beaches would you add to this list?
I’d add Praia Mole in Florianopolis as an amazing gay beach worth checking out. It also happens to be the beach in the photo at the top of this post.

I grew up on Long Island, NY and spent my summers on Fire Island, mostly Davis Park. It was definitely a NYC summer retreat place for the “regular folk” who could afford the Hamptons or liked the more rugged living in beach houses with unfinished interior walls, board walks and sand paths everywhere. Not a glamorous beach area but was known for beach parties and the Sixish which brought the boating folks on the docks and the renters in their houses together every Friday night from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. It is still my #1 beach but for obvious reasons. It is similar in character to the eastern end of Cranes beach up here in MA. Boston is now my home city.
Sunset Beach, Treasure Island, Florida is another nice beach. Not many people know of it. It used to be THE Gay Beach in St Pete area. There was a gay club there called Bedrock that burned to the ground in the late 90s – the city wouldn’t let them rebuild. So the city bought the property and made it a park. The gays in the area still go; were easy to find :-).
North Bakers Beach is were the “naked” part of the San Francisco beach. Not easy to get to and usually chilly and water cold. I have been fortunate on two visits to get there when the weather warm and sun BRIGHT! I was so nice to be naked there. Again, definitely a rugged beach, no clubs, shops or even fresh water near.
Galvaston beach in Texas was a little disappointing. But I got there about a month after a big storm. The beach was still covered with flotsam. I didn’t stay long.
