Boston’s reputation for having a crappy nightlife if you are gay is painfully true but the real irony is the fact that since Boston Chops (a steak house) opened here in the South End, you are likely to find the bar chalk full of gay men.

It certainly is starting to seem that way. But here’s the deal. It’s not just the fault of the clubs. We (gay men) are staying at home on Manhunt, glued to our computers. We don’t go out like we used to. This is partly our fault, and if you aren’t going to go out and meet people face to face, spend money on drinks, then you can’t expect club promoters to rock a party like they used to ten years ago.
With that said, the Ramrod needs to change its name to the Copacabana. Leather, back room is no more. Avalon is gone, Machine has more girls than boys at any one time. The Alley is so poorly managed and promoted that the only people going there are probably getting out of work at Downtown Crossing. Remember Buzz on a Sat. night? So much fun yet so closed. The Eagle in the South End, well the South End has turned into Yuppieville. We gay guys used to rule the roost on Tremont. Well those days are gone. Rise afterhours nightclub used to be all gay men, exclusive. Now you can bring your pets and relax in the lounge.

Interesting! I need to check out both! ps. I have always wondered where the phrase, ‘chalk full of’ or is it ‘chock full of’ (like Chock Full O’ Nuts, is that heavenly coffee..) came from. Oh oh…looks like I have some more research to do!

I’m thinking “chalk full” is just BosGuy’s accent showing up.

clearly Boston has some gay bars – although they certainly don’t compare to NYC or Chicago. But I kinda love that the bars at so many of the restaurants in the South End have become de facto gay bars (Stella, Chops)

How true! Gone are the days of the gentlemen’s club The Napoleon where everyone dressed. And Irene at the coat check. 12 Carver with Phil in the swing. The Punch Bowl with Sylvia Sydney and her flashlight, (no tip-Miss S. would shine her light and say loudly “A beer for a star”. And the Casablanca in Cambridge. Now days everyone either looks like a mess or goes out of town or is married. Where are all the handsome well dressed men? And I don’t mean tatted gym bunnies who look like they want to be in the next M. Lucas movie.

Interesting. Providence has all the gay clubs. You Boston people come down here every weekend. In fact Providence seems to be the place for weekends for MA residents. Try getting off exit 21 on I-95S on a Friday afternoon and you’ll understand.

I’m going to have to check out. I’ve never been to PVD.

Just take the T down. That brings you to Providence station. All the clubs including bathhouses are clustered in a 1 square mile radius or so.
