BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaserEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague to see if you can figure it out together.

I’ll confirm answers later in the day so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance.

This weeks riddle:  Two men are trying to determine if a barrel of wine is more than half full. Without any measuring implements and without removing any wine from the barrel, how can one easily determine if the barrel is more or less than half full?

  1. The tilting answer is better. But I was thinking you could mark the level of the wine, then close the barrel, turn it upside down and open the other end of the barrel. Look inside and if you can see the mark then it’s less than half, if you can’t see the mark then it’s more than half.

  2. Tilt the barrel. See bottom? Less than half full.

  3. This was the answer I was looking for this week:

Tilt the barrel until the wine is at the lip of the barrel. If you can see the bottom of the barrel it is less than half full – if you cannot see the bottom of the barrel it is more than half full.

  4. Tilt it, if you see the bottom it’s less than half full if the wine still covers the bottom then it’s more than half full

  5. drill a hole halfway down the barrel. If it is more than half full, the wine will escape. (though does that count as “removing” wine?).

  6. Well I can drink about a half a barrel of wine, so if I drink as much as I can and there’s still some left….

  7. Tilt the barrel 45 degrees – if you can see the bottom it is less than half full – if you can not see the bottom of the barrel then it is more than half full and you have a lot more drinking to do 🙂
