Earlier today I wrote that the former South End gay sports bar, Fritz, might reopen in a new location later this year.
This afternoon I received an email from the owner of Fritz indicating this was a rumor and he has not sold the name or logo. #WickedBummer

Fritz indeed had a logo. That neon sign WAS the logo. I miss Fritz and don’t think a location on Washington St will replace it. I worked there in the mid 80s and it will always be my neighborhood bar.

When doing business as a “DBA”, it’s automatically trademarked or copyrighted and no other business or person can infringe on that trademark if, and only if, the registration is valid and current with the city it is filed in. While the name, and logo, cannot be used elsewhere currently, and as confirmed by the current owner or Fritz, it does not mean that a new club/bar is slated to open at the current Red Fez location. Red Fez is not looking to renew their license; therefore, the possibility of a new “Fritz” in is the works. Stay tuned people….a new club/bar will be opening soon!

The name Fritz is a “DBA” and it doesn’t have to be a trademark to be restricted from being used elsewhere as long as it’s registered with the city of Boston. And FYI, if you do you research right, you’ll know that a new bar will be opening soon and the owners are affiliated with the old Fritz! Geesh people, if you’re going to spread rumors, at least do it right! Can you say “Telephone Game” gone awry!

Why would they need to sell the name? The old place is closed and they don’t own a trademark on the name “Fritz.” Did they even have a logo?

Why would he need to sell anything? It’s not like the name “fritz” is trademarked.

As much as I enjoyed going to Fritz, I would welcome a new bar in town, whether it had the name Fritz or not. Maybe a new bar could be started and some of the old staff could be hired to work there. Boston definitely needs another gay bar, sports or otherwise.
