Hey HBO, I’m still hooked on Looking

HBO, gay dramaSince writing this post, it has been confirmed that Looking has been canceled.  A movie made for HBO is in the making to wrap up any loose ends – bummah.

Did you watch Season 2 of Looking – HBO’s half hour drama that traces the lives (and relationship) of three gay men who live in San Francisco. Last Sunday was Looking’s Season 2 finale and now according to an article in Towleroad, HBO may be canceling the program.

That would really be a shame because I felt like the series finally hit its stride this season.  My frustrations with the three main characters were mollified in season 2, and I really started to enjoy their individual story lines despite the 30 minute format which I think is too brief for a drama.  Last week the NYT offered a great review of the second season in Mike Hale’s article, Authentic Characters Seeking Sex and Romance, and a Future on HBO.

What a bummer if HBO does indeed cancel Looking. Fortunately, I have Cucumber and Banana to look forward to starting on Logo-TV on April 13.

  1. I enjoyed the show, but the ratings were not there so HBO canned it

Good riddance. It had every tired gay cliche packed into every single episode. Hated it.

  3. I enjoyed watching both seasons of Looking. I agree that it should be an hour long. It seems the minute I’m really engaged, its over.

  4. Sadly, it will not enter production (at least for HBO) for additional episodes. HBO is closing out with a “movie” or extended episode.

The problem is that the series has failed to achieve important financial benchmarks for HBO (new subscribers and online/on demand paid viewings for those who do not subscribe.)

I concur that this season of episodes provided far better character identification and development than the first series of episodes.

I too am looking forward to Cucumber and Banana – he did such a wonderful job with Queer As Folk!

  5. How in the world can HBO cancel a series after two seasons?!

Granted, it is cable, and cable does things differently than network programming, but two seasons?! If HBO does that, it shall be as much of a jip as only three seasons of “Veronica Mars!”
