BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaser, rodin, riddleEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away.

I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle:   At the hardware store I was quoted 12 cents for one, 24 cents for 50, and 36 cents for 144. I wanted six. What was I buying and how much did it cost me?

  1. Did you want six (6 Main Street)? Then 12 cents. Or did you want six (123456 Main Street)? Then 72 cents.

  2. You threw me because you wrote “1” as “one.” Three letters (assuming they’re the same price as numbers) would have cost 36 cents, not 12. Of course, either way, six would cost the same as one, just as 6 would cost the same as 1.

  3. six cost the same as one. you’re buying numbers for your address to put on your house, so six costs twelve cents
