Defunct department stores of New England

BradleesIf you are over 30 and grew up in New England, you probably remember many of the defunct retail chains that Boston.com posted earlier this week.  I remember or recognize most of them. Do you?

  3. zayre, filene’s, ames, service merchandise, bradlees, jordan marsh, a.j.wright – 5 of these were in the philly area.

    we too have lost many department stores – wanamakers, strawbridge & clothier, gimbels, lits, snellenburgs, korvettes, nichols, two guys, woolworths, mccrory, bambergers, peebles, w.t.grant, j.j.newberry, bonwit teller, nan duskin, hill’s, etc.

    around here, the only stores we have left are sears (on its last legs), penney’s (ditto), macy’s, kohl’s. then you have the expensive stores, like neimans/saks/bloomingdales.

    and then there’s wall-fart; you can’t pay me to go in there (shudders).

    two local stores that ARE still doing well here are boscov’s and bon-ton.
