One month from today Sergio and I will board a plane to visit Portugal. Despite all our travels and the fact that Sergio speaks Portuguese fluently, we’ve never visited the country. This will be a brief trip, spending just a few days in the north in Porto followed by four days in Lisbon where we plan to possibly do a day trip or two – time permitting.
Based on stories from friends and the photos I have seen I am assuming we will love Portugal and want to return, but for now I’m getting excited – counting down the days. If you’ve been to Porto or Lisbon and have some suggestions you think Sergio and I would enjoy, please feel free to contact me directly or leave the tips in my blog’s comment section.

Forgot all about mentioning my favourite travel writers. They’re a Scottish couple based in Tenerife who travel all over Europe and write about it. They bill themselves as “the online travel magazine dedicated to hiking and dining on and off the beaten track”. They’ve visited Portugal a number of times and you’ll find those articles here:

When I visited Porto, the Serralves Museum was an unexpected treat. It focuses on contemporary art, and has a lovely garden.
Near Porto is the small town of Matosinho. At lunch times you can eat fresh sea food cooked on the spot at many small sidewalk cafes. I never tried this having discovered it too late, but it looked great from the upper deck of the tour bus as I passed by.
In Lisbon, a visit to Sintra is almost an obligatory day trip but it’s worth it. Above the town is the old Moorish Castle and the Summer Castle of the Portuguese Royals. The town itself is small but I had the best salt cod dish I’ve ever had at a small restaurant in a side street there. If you know little about Lisbon, as I did, a guided walking tour of the centre is informative and worth while.
