BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:
The rungs of a 10 foot ladder attached to a ship are 1 foot apart. If the water is rising at the rate of one foot an hour, how long will it take until the water covers over the ladder?

  4. Assuming that the ship floats and that the ladder is attached at the deck, however many rungs that are in the water will stay the same. If however the hull is holed and the ship is allowed to sink, the number of rungs covered will depend upon the rate of entry of the water through the hole and the draft of the ship vs. the depth of the water.

  6. unless the ship sinks, it will never cover the ladder. it’s attached to the ship.

  7. As the water rises the ship also rises so the ladder will remain relatively the same distance from the water. That was the long answer.
