Boston Sports Club closes gyms, fires staff then charges members

Due to COVID-19, Boston Sports Clubs were ordered to close. The company promptly fired all their staff (which is upsetting since many of their staff are friends), so when they charged Sergio and me our monthly fee I was both surprised and disappointed.  This practice runs counter to what other chains in Boston have done and has changed my perception of how I view the BSC brand.

Apparently others felt similar because Boston.com ran this article earlier this week, Boston Sports Clubs wouldn’t let memberships be canceled during the coronavirus outbreak. Then they charged them

If you’re a member of the BSC and have been charged a monthly membership fee, let me know by leaving a comment and contact our Attorney General’s Office to file a complaint with BSC / TSI. You can do that by calling 617.727.2200 to let them know that BSC charged you a monthly membership fee and you want a refund, or you can file a complaint online like I did. It takes less than five minutes and you can do it right from, here.

How SLICK they are….I have the emails from 3/31 and 4/1 from the parent company which I will gladly share. Both emails state that you will be given a FUTURE “credit” (although not specified as to how much) once the gym is up and running. Now this is where the real “fuck you” happens. The link to cancel is offered only on April 1st….I tried to cancel on the 31st and in their website I could only cancel in person OR via telephone and never reached a rep….however the their cancellation policy requires the notice from the first of the month ensuring they will get paid. This little trick was a guarantee that I would still be charged. As a premium member they are are offering FUTURE upgrades (A value of $600 to $700….NOTICE, NOT a SPECIFIC price so clearly planning to raise dues) that do not benefit current premium members and only those who use one gym location once “the economy is up and running”. They are offering an app for fitness….I already have cable. Let me know if you would like to see the emails and gladly share.

    • I agree Davant. It is so shady. Definitely log a complaint with the AG. If enough people complain I think the State will bring a level of scrutiny to BSC that may make them reconsider their policy.

  3. So with you on this! Tried to call my local BSC, got no answer, can’t suspend online and when I sent an email got an auto response that said for safety they would respond to emails when they open back up. You can answer emails remotely while practicing social distancing?!? Calling the attorney gen today. Thanks for the post advice

Hi ! Thank you for spreading this news to everyone . I was charged the April monthly fee , and when they closed in March it would have been nice if they created everyone for those days that they were not open.

The company is truly irresponsible. Other issues with the way my BSC club is run have never been addressed as well so this confirms the company’s awful way of doing business

  5. Outrageous. They most definitely would not be getting my patronage going forward. In this time, you best believe I’m am keeping an eye on how companies are handling this with customers and employees. I have a long memory…and don’t forget.

  7. We were charged and have filed a complaint. They have been all about the money, and less about the training, for years.

  8. We actually did receive a notice from BSC that they would stop charging (this was after there was already bad press) but then they charged us anyway on April 2. Very disappointed with them!
