2022 Boston Book Festival returns this weekend

This weekend the 14th Annual Boston Book Festival will take place on Friday afternoon and all day on Saturday. Centered in Copley Square and the Boston Public Library, the BBF is a wonderful festival worth checking out.

This year’s festival will bring together more than 200 fiction, nonfiction, young adult and kid authors will participate in this year’s festival that includes readings and discussions, book signings, workshops, and other lively literary events. And it’s all FREE and open to the public.

50th Anniversary: SpeakOUT Boston

HONORING THE POWER OF LGBTQ+ STORIES

Did you know that Boston founded the Gay Speakers Bureau just a couple years following the Stonewall Rebellion, to give our community a voice and through that voice, help open minds? For the past 50 years SpeakOUT Boston speakers have continued that tradition. This year’s milestone anniversary will be celebrated by recognizing the work that Warren Blumenfeld and Michael Bobbitt have done to help amplify the voices of LGBTQ+ people and other marginalized communities.

ABOUT THIS YEARS HONOREES

Warren Blumenfeld has had a long career as a social justice activist and academic and currently teaches at UMass Amherst. He and another speaker, Diane Raymond, co-wrote the first gay and lesbian textbook used at the college level, Looking at Gay and Lesbian Life. His books include Homophobia: How We all Pay the Price and The What, the So What and the Now What of Social Justice Education.

Michael Bobbitt is the Executive Director of the Mass Cultural Council (MCC) and is on the board of the New England Foundation for the Arts. His earlier years in the arts were as a playwright, director, and choreographer with productions at Arena Stage, Ford’s Theatre, The Shakespeare Theatre Company, The Kennedy Center and many other stages. Michael has been at the forefront of challenging the arts administration field to build anti-racist practices and policies and to create more inclusive arts organizations.

Portraits of Pride in Boston

Portraits of Pride is an LGBTQ Photography Exhibition currently on display at the Boston Common. The exhibit, which pays tribute to LGBTQ History Month (which is this month), will run through October 29th. The exhibit which is free and open to the public is comprised of 8-foot tall portraits of local LGBTQ leaders taken by world-renowned photographer John Huet. 

This one-of-a-kind exhibit honors the rich history of Boston’s LGBTQ+ community and the many contributions the area’s LGBTQ+ leaders have made to the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights in Massachusetts and beyond. An additional installation of the portraits is also exhibited on the Gallery Wall of Seaport Square located at 60 Seaport Blvd. in Boston.

Boston marijuana and Greek food festivals

Doesn’t it seem devious to host a pot and Greek food festival the same weekend?

Each weekend in the fall in Boston is full of festivals, concerts and other public celebrations, and this weekend will be no different.

This weekend Boston will host one of the largest and longest running marijuana festivals in the country, MassCann. With as many as 50,000 people descending upon the Boston Common to celebrate all things marijuana, it seems like a cruel trick to play on all those unsuspecting stoners to have such an amazingly delicious and tantalizing Greek food festival just a mile away at John The Baptist Church in the South End.

While there are plenty of other activities, festivals and events happening this weekend, the combination of these two proved to be quite costly for Sergio and me a few years ago. After attending the Freedom Festival and feeling quite “free” we walked over to the Greek Church basement where rows of homemade Greek food both savory and sweet tempted us. I just hope this year we will show a bit more restraint when we visit John The Baptist Church.

Mass Bears and Cubs wants you!

The annual Mass Bears and Cubs competition to name this year’s Mr. Boston Bear and Cub will take place next month in October and interested contestants should sign up now.

The competition provides contestants with the opportunity to make new friends, meet and interact with the greater community, showcase their talents, express their interests, show their support for the LGBTQ+ and Bear community. Mr. Boston Bear/Cub earns the opportunity to proudly represent Mass Bears and Cubs over the coming year and serves as the “MBC Ambassador” to Boston’s LGBTQ+ community.

This year the winner of Mr. Boston Bear and Mr. Boston Cub will earn $500 in cash prizes with the first runner up also winning $250. For more details about Mass Bears and Cubs competition and to register as a contestant visit the link below.
