What to do this weekend
Lady Gaga performs in Boston Friday and Saturday night at Fenway Park
For the tens of thousands of you who are moving into a new apartment with a 9/1 lease I want to wish you a very happy Allston Christmas . For those of you not moving and looking for something to do this weekend, there are plenty of options like SoWa First Fridays, Guerrilla Queer Bar, not one but two shows from Lady Gaga at Fenway Park on Friday and Saturday night, and if you’re looking for an excuse to get out of town, Providence is hosting WaterFire (full lighting) on Sunday evening.

The current political climate has become increasingly poisonous and I wanted to share an inspiring photograph from the 1st National March for LGBT rights that took place in 1979. The LGBT community was organizing and building a voice that would help it flex its political muscle. Something that would be desperately needed in just a few years when the AIDS epidemic blew up. Ronald Reagan and all of the US Congress (Democrats and Republicans alike) would turn their backs on our community while tens of thousands of young men succumbed to the “Gay Cancer” as it was called.

As we roll into the final week of Summer, I want to remind everyone that Allston Christmas is upon us. Fortunately, there are 40+ events happening this week that you may be interested in learning more about or going to like the poolside showing of Jaws at the Ink Block on Tuesday, the 5th Annual Illuminate Boston Harbor & Fireworks on Thursday. If you’re lucky you may have scored tickets to see Lady Gaga at Fenway Park on Friday and Saturday night. If you’re looking for an excuse to get out of town, Providence is hosting WaterFire (full lighting) on Sunday evening.

Vintage gay
Tennessee Williams was a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who frequented Provincetown. Frank Merlo was a truck driver, part time actor and WWII veteran. He and Williams were romantically linked from 1948 until 1963, when Merlo died of lung cancer. Williams is said to never have recovered from the death of his long time lover and was consumed by depression.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price.
