AAA Girls Tour comes to Boston Oct. 1

Willam Belli, Alaska Thunderfuck, Courtney ActWillam Belli, Alaska Thunderfuck and Courtney Act are touring this fall as The AAA Girls and they will be coming to Boston and performing at Machine or as Ryan Landry refers to it, “The Ramrod Performing Arts Center”.

General admission prices are roughly the cost of 2 martinis, $39 but ridiculously expensive packages that allow you special access and photos are also available for the FANatic.  The tour is also stopping at 14 other cities. Tickets for all their North American shows are available now at www.aaagirls.net.

Vintage gay

Shown above are Hollywood elite Tab Hunter and Anthony Perkins. The two kept their relationship a secret as both were in the closet when they met in the early 1960s. Below is a smiling photo of Tab from the 1950s. With his all American good looks it’s no wonder he was such a box office success.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Boston gay bars

gay bostonWith each new academic year, tens of thousands move to Boston for the first time. Unfortunately, Boston’s reputation for having a crappy nightlife if you are gay is painfully true but that doesn’t mean there are no gay bars or places to go.

Below is a list of venues that are currently active and worth checking out.

BOSTON GAY BARSLGBTQ boston bars, gay nightlife boston

Below is a listing of the remaining gay bars in Boston and Cambridge that I know about. Apologies for any bars I may have overlooked.

Boston Eagle 520 Tremont Street (South End) is not a leather bar despite its name. Often referred to as the Dirty Bird, this is one of Boston’s oldest running gay bars and mostly attracts an older crowd. Typically busiest after 12:30 / 1:00 on Friday and Saturday nights.

Cathedral Station 1222 Washington Street (South End) is Boston’s gay sports bar. The large space gets most crowded on summer evenings when their patio is open and during big sporting events when many come to watch. Cathedral also offers free parking (a rarity in Boston).

Club Cafe 209 Columbus Ave (South End / Back Bay) is Boston’s most popular gay bar. While its Napoleon Room has cabaret music, most come to socialize at the front bar or to dance. Mostly attracts a 20 and 30-something crowd.

dbar 1236 Dorchester Ave (Dorchester) Boston’s first gay bar in Dorchester attracts a younger crowd typically from the Savin Hill n’hood. They feature fun theme nights like Show Tune Tuesday and seasonal Tea Dances.

Jacques Cabaret 79 Broadway Street (Bay Village) is Boston’s only drag bar with shows 7-days a week as well as the location for a bi-monthly kink / fetish party called Fascination.

Machine / Ramrod 1254 Boylston Street (Fenway / Kenmore) Once upon a time Ramrod was Boston’s best leather bar bot those days are no more. Upstairs is Rarmrod and downstairs is the dance club, Machine: dancing, drag and more are options on different days.

Paradise 180 Mass Ave (MIT/Central Sq in Cambridge) is a two level dance club that also hosts drag shows and has go go boys. Their biggest night is typically Saturday when Chris Harris hosts Saga Saturdays.

Peggy O’Neill’s 1312 Dorchester Ave (Dorchester) is a pub that has also transitioned into a gay bar to serve the growing gay population in the neighborhood. Their biggest nights are Thursdays and Saturdays when they host dance parties.

The Alley 14 Pi Alley (Downtown Crossing) is located down a pedestrian alley and is a favorite for Boston Bears and Cubs. Special monthly parties like FUZZ offer dancing but this is typically more of a bar than a disco with trivia nights, pool tables and darts.

Trophy Room 26 Chandler Street (South End) is the former home of Boston’s gay bar, Fritz,  and is located on the first floor of the Chandler Inn. The bar is a cross between a gay sports bar and bistro that gets a cross-section of all ages and is popular with guys in the Back Bay and South End.

Gay hipster coffee shop: Teatotaller (in rural NH)

somersworth NH hipster coffee shopBack in June, a coffee house / tea house in Somersworth, NH (a town of ~11,000 residents sandwiched between Portsmouth and Rochester, NH) raised some eyebrows with their roadside billboard (shown below).  The billboard ended up creating quite a bit of controversy in stodgy NH but it also gained a fair bit of praise and was noted on social media by yours truly and many others.

While I’ve yet to visit, the next time Sergio and I drive up to visit my parents on Lake Winnipesaukee we are definitely going to make a detour to check out this self proclaimed “oasis of queer, hipster coffee, tea and pastry goodness”.  I grew up in NH and could have never imagined such a cafe – let alone a provocative, gender-bending billboard. If you are saddened by the current political climate and divisiveness, look to this group of feisty entrepreneurs for inspiration because a little bit of fierce can go a long way.

queer, hipster cafe

Should you find yourself in the area and want to check out this colorful cafe they are open six days a week (every day except for Tuesday) at 69 High Street in Somersworth, NH or online at teatotallerteahouse.com.
