Edward Carpenter was a socialist poet and philosopher, anthologist, and early gay activist. Returning from India in 1891, Carpenter met George Merrill, a working class man also from Sheffield, and the two men struck up a relationship that would last for 47 years until January 1928 when Merrill died suddenly, leaving Carpenter devastated.

Dirk Bogarde and Anthony Forwood were a couple for more than 50 years. Dirk was an incredibly successful actor and Anthony was his manager. The first photo looks as if it may have been taken in the 1950s and the second showing Anthony on the left and Dirk on the right was taken in the 1980s before Forward died in May of 1988. You can learn more about this interesting pair here.

The painters Jared French and Paul Cadmus were lovers who began to experiment with a camera along with Margaret French during summers on the beaches of Fire Island and Provincetown. Their work was never wholly accepted by the Art establishment. You can learn more about this interesting pair here.
