Casa Valentina at SpeakEasy Stage through November 28

boston arts, boston theater, theatreEarlier this week Sergio and I attended the SpeakEasy Stage production of Casa Valentina at the Calderwood Pavilion on Tremont Street in the South End.

The play is set in 1962 at a Catskills resort that has seen better days and centers around a group of heterosexual men who secretly gather to dress and behave like women. The funny play – and it is really very funny – gets a bit serious when they are challenged to publicly reveal their female alter-egos in the pursuit of greater political acceptance. Harvey Fierstein wrote this play and his wit is evident throughout. The SpeakEasy Stage cast does a good job delivering his sometimes caustic comments and many hilarious Oscar Wilde quotes. Sergio and I found ourselves laughing along with the audience regularly and thought this was one of the funnier performances we’ve seen this year. Tickets remain available and will run through Saturday, November 28th.

Are you heading to New York City this fall? You may want to check out a new play that takes place in 1950 called, Perfect Arrangement. The production includes Broadway and TV actor, Christopher J. Hanke and was written by Topher Payne.

Initially produced in Atlanta last year, Payne has brought his show to New York City to share with a larger audience. The biting comedy revolves around two U.S. State Department employees, Bob and Norma, who have been tasked with identifying sexual deviants within their ranks. The twist is that both Bob and Norma are gay, and have married each other’s partners as a carefully constructed cover.  Perfect Arrangement is in previews but formally opens later this week, October 15th at The Duke on 42nd Street.

When asked if Payne thought the show would appeal to all audiences (not just the LGBT community) he responded in an interview in HuffingtonPost ,“Everybody knows what it is like to have a secret.”

You can find our more about this production by visiting the website, here.

Sparks start to fly pretty quickly as the Lafayette family come together for the first time in years.  Family members start to verbalize long held grudges in an attempt to clear the air and make peace but bonds are tested when a terrible discovery is made.  The painful and sometimes tense confrontations on stage provide an interesting mirror to tensions we see in our society.
