Thursday, May 8th is opening night for SpeakEasy Stage Company’s latest play, Mothers & Sons, a timely and touching new play about love, loss, and family, written by Terrence McNally.  This 2014 Tony Nominee for Best Play, follows Dallas matriarch Katharine Gerard on a sudden trip to New York to meet with her late son’s former partner Cal, who is now married to another man and raising a young son.  Katherine Gerard who is still coping with the loss and of her son is challenged by Cal to consider the life her son might have led and how society has changed around her.

I have been waiting for this show all season since SpeakEasy Stage Co. first announced this in their 2014-15 line up. I fully expect I’ll need to bring Kleenex to get through some scenes but will power through all the same and I hope you will too. This is the New England premiere from one of Boston’s best theater companies.

Ryan Landry and the Gold Dust Orphans open with their latest musical, Thoroughly Muslim Millie, later tonight at the Ramrod Performing Arts Center.

If you cannot check out the show tonight or opening weekend, fear not since the musical will run through May 10th.

Thoroughly Muslim Millie is about a young girl from a Canadian convent who is thrust across the border into the Middle East and straight into the arms of the Prince of Persia!  The musical parody explodes across the stage with big splashy songs, tap dancing Talibans, and bawdy “Burqa Ladies”.

Mark your calendars, because the Fiddlehead Theatre Company, the Resident Theatre Company of the historic Strand Theatre in Dorchester will conclude their 2014-2015 season with the Tony-Award winning rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.

The Theater Offensive is rolling out their latest production, Mommy Queerest, one week from today, starting April 9th at Club Cafe.

The raunchy one-woman show centers on Kat Evasco, who co-wrote the play with John Caldon and tells her story as a young lesbian and her closeted lesbian mother, reclaiming their sexuality in their own ways, and how their relationship is strained and strengthened by that exploration process.  From home to school to camp to church, Kat acts out a loopy Kama sutra of graphic scenes. But each affair brings her back to her Mom, who can transform any frank talk into a lesbian soap opera of absurd denials and shocking revelations.

Mommy Queerest runs April 9th – 17th (Thursday – Sunday)

Theater doesn’t get anymore affordable than “pay-what-you-can” so no excuses for not checking out this production of Loot by the Hub Theatre Company of Boston which will run from Friday, March 27th through Sunday, April 12th at the Fist Church in Boston located at 66 Marlborough Street in the Back Bay.

Loot is an amoral, dark farce described as a tour de force of bad taste and taboos that satires the Roman Catholic Church, social attitudes towards death, police brutality and pretty much everything in between according to the media release.

The Hub Theatre Company of Boston is one of the city’s newest production companies (founded in 2012) and they focus on helping to foster creativity among Boston’s emerging theatre artists.  All tickets are pay-what-you-can and may be purchased online via www.hubtheatreboston.ticketleap.com.

Last week The SpeakEasy Stage Company opened with their latest musical, Big Fish.  The title may sound familiar because Tim Burton made a film based on the story that starred Ewan McGregor in 2003.  The SpeakEasy Stage Company musical focuses on the relationship between a father (Edward Bloom) and his son (Will Bloom) which has become strained in recent years.  Both look to make peace with each other after the father’s health declines but will they reconcile in time?

The 2.5 hour musical has two acts with an intermission.  While the second act is much more emotional, it was my favorite part of the show and more than a little touching.  The final scenes had both Sergio and I silently groping for the tissues I had in my coat pocket.

A loving and evocative portrait of Esther, an independent but lonely African American seamstress in early 20^th-century Manhattan who earns a living sewing exquisite lingerie for wealthy socialites uptown, and women of ill repute downtown.  When Esther receives a letter from a stranger who is laboring on the Panama Canal, she begins a long-distance courtship with him, only to discover that he is not all that he seems.  Disillusioned but unbroken, Esther reluctantly returns to her sewing machine to refashion her dreams from the cloth of her life’s experiences.  Note: Intimate Apparel closes on Saturday, March 14.

A hot-shot fighter pilot’s career in the skies, “alone in the blue,” is ended by an unexpected pregnancy. Reassigned to a windowless trailer in the desert outside Las Vegas, by day, she hunts down terrorists, her face lit by the dull grey glow of a drone’s monitor. At night, she returns to her domestic life with husband and daughter. As she tracks a high-profile target half a world away, the pressure mounts. Note: Grounded closes on Saturday, March 22.
