Welcome to Boston loozah!

Love or hate Boston its hard to find another city more in love with their sports teams and with good reason.  As the article in ESPN proclaims, Boston is America’s most dominant sports city bar none.  Four teams with seven championship titles in ten years (never mind how many finals Boston teams have been in over the past decade).

Eat your heart out NYC, chew on that LA.  There are few cities in the world that have such a storied history or can point to such an embarrassment of riches with regards to recent success in sports.  I’m sure there are many who don’t care, but it is a point of great pride for me.

To summarize, I’d have to say ‘Wicked Awesome’. Thanks to Kevin from Twitter for bringing this to my attention

  1. I didn’t like this at all. I’ve been a fan of Boston teams since the late 60s early 70s. My Grandmother went to opening day every year from the late for decades.

And I was a fan when Boston teams were not very good. Actually, they were horrible. The fair weather fan doesn’t remember the 1-15 season the Patriots had in 1990 or the crushing Stanley Cup loss to Bobbie Clarke and the Flyers in ’76. They don’t remember the Celtics before Larry Bird and Robert Parrish or the Sox when they had the worst pitching in the AL year in and year out.

Thus, when I see this, it makes me un happy because the Boston sports scene has been great the last 15 years. But I want to know where all the fans were in the ’70s ans ’80s when Pats games were blacked out at home because they couldn’t sell enough tickets? Where did they go after the ’78 Sox blew a 14 game lead? Where were they when the Bruins were better known for chasing fans up into the stands at MSG and not for play making? and where did they go after the ’87 Celtics lost to the Lakers and they would not win another title until 2008?

The true fan remembers the dark times as well as the good times. And that’s why I didn’t like this cover or story at all.

My Grandma died in 1995, when the Sox began to rebuild the team into the organization that would eventually win in 2004. It was a bitterweet day, as my Dad had passed away in June and I know both of them would have been overjoyed to see the Sox win.

As to the Patriots not representing Boston, I beg to differ. They represent New England, of which Boston is an integral part. Not to mention their stadium is only about 20 miles south of the city.

I’m always going to be grateful that we’ve had such good fortune and I’m hoping that the Cubs, the Indians, and other teams that have not seen a World Series Title in a long time will finally be able to enjoy the sweet taste of victory.

    • Too funny, but the distance between downtown Boston and Foxboro where the Patriot’s play would still all fit in downtown L.A. Distance is a bit different out this way. However, having said that over the past decade you could include all of California’s teams for all the major sports played in the US and the list of championships would still be dwarfed by how many Boston / MA teams have won.

  5. LA can’t even support an NFL franchise. Pathetic that a metro of 14 million can’t even focus enough to support a team twenty Sundays per year. LA is not a major sports city — no city in the Sun Belt is. The only major sports cities in the US are Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Chicago and maybe Pittsburgh or Cleveland. Buffalo gets an honorary mention. Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Phoenix and San Diego are jokes.

  6. Jason –
Good point, except those figures only talk about the last decade. The Boston Celtics won an unprecedented 10 championships in 11 years starting in 1959 and running thru 1969.

LA is a great sports town, but really the championship banners that grace the rafters of the Boston Garden, Fenway Park and Gillette Stadium tally to a larger number. Perhaps Montreal’s dominance in hockey or the NYY’s domination in baseball show a more storied franchise but that’s debatable and in aggregate – including all four of the major sports in the US you’d be hard pressed to find an equal to Boston; esp over the past 10 years.

  7. “Is Tom Brady too pretty?” Yes, this is a serious sports article. Bwahahaha! Next month: Wes Welker asks, “Does this uniform make my ass look fat?” 🙂

  8. Except LA has more than 7 in 10 years.

  9. I’m not a huge sports fan but when the Sox broke the curse in 2004, I thought about my grandmother. She was a die hard Red Sox fan, right down to the “Hate the Yankees” hanky.

She would have loved to see them win that championship game. But alas, she died to soon.
