Every city has their traditions and one of Boston’s is the Swan Boats which grace the Public Garden starting each spring.
This is an annual tradition spanning 135 years; started in 1877 by Robert Paget and still run by his family.
Romantics will be happy to read it was a love story which sparked the idea behind the swans. Apparently Mr. Paget was fond of “Lohengrin,” an opera in which a knight crosses a river in a boat drawn by a swan to protect his love. I can recall being taken on these boats when I was a small child, and I will probably do the same with my nephews and nieces…like I said, its a tradition and Bostonians are big on traditions.

Yes I am Vincent Ricci and I did re-design and sculpt a new swan, made molds to cast fiberglass swans for the boats at the Boston Garden.

Yes it has been about 30 years since he did the sculptures and cast the Swans. He is now living and working in Waltham, MA., and Stonybook Fine Arts In Jamaica Plain,, MA.
