South End Rumor: Red Fez to become Fritz Boston

Fritz Boston moving to Red Fez

UPDATE Fritz will not reopen in the Red Fez: details here

One of my most read blog posts from 2013 Farewell to Fritz appears to have been incorrect. At the time Fritz had announced they would close in early 2014 to remodel but would reopen better than before. However, persistent rumors led me and others to believe Fritz days were numbered, and I bemoaned the loss of a great gay neighborhood / sports bar.

Now rumors indicate that Fritz will indeed reopen but not in the Chandler Inn space.  This blogger has been told that Fritz will get the keys to The Red Fez at 1222 Washington Street in the South End in early March and they plan to reopen there. The new space is double the size of the original bar, has a full kitchen, patio and parking for patrons.

I’ll continue to look into these rumors. It isn’t clear if the owners plan to do any remodeling or when they may open, but if you have any news to share, contact me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

  1. it would be a disgrace to lose the red fez ( a boston landmark and institution ) to a transient gay dive bar

    • The Red Fez lost is edge and customers a long time ago, which is why it closed. It was a dive on some nights and dead on others. This supposed institution was lost many years ago.

If this rumor is true for the love of the gay divas PLEASE make it a well-designed bar. Fritz’s interior was depressing and Club Cafe’s interior looks like it came from the late 90s. Look to LA’s Here or The Abbey for inspiration as to what a gay bar can look like if designed properly. There are enough gay designers (Stephen Martyak of studioTYAK, who designed the interior of the Sinclair in Cambridge, comes to mind ) who the owners can hire to make this space fantastic.

      Don’t squander this opportunity!

  2. Blerg! Make it like Boxers or GYM Bar. They’re great spaces. Maybe this will be the start of more gay bars on Washington Street.
