Looking for something different to do? Tomorrow, Friday, October 3rd is the SoWa Artist Guild First Friday celebration. Visit 450 Harrison Ave in the South End to meet the local artists, walk through their art studios and check out their work. More than 60 artists routinely open their studios for the “First Friday” of every month.

A recent study conducted by the MFA Boston has concluded that Bostonians attend a greater number of cultural events per month when compared with the national average; and for those wondering sporting events were not factored into the survey.
The study found that 78% of Boston-area audiences participate in at least one cultural event each month, while only 69% of national audiences do. The most culturally active audiences around Boston are Millennials (18 to 29) and Generation X (30 to 49).
The survey results really don’t surprise me. Boston has a large number of cultural venues (more than most cities its size) as well as an affluent, young, educated population. You can read more about the findings here.

Mayor Marty Walsh keeps impressing me and in the most surprising ways. As part of his plan to encourage arts and cultural programs, his team has partnered with four local theaters to create “Late Night Art” film screenings this Friday and Saturday – Sept. 26-27.
The program will include cult classic films, such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Breakfast Club and Mean Girls. Remember after the show you can grab the T which runs late on the weekends.

I’ve said this before (and I’m sure I’ll say again), but the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA Boston) is a fantastic museum open to the public and free each Thursday from 5 – 9pm.
Call some friends and suggest meeting there after work then grab a bite or drink nearby. I suggest Row 34 for dinner and Drink for a great bar option.

I’ll miss this semi annual South End tradition, but I wanted to write about the fall South End Open Studios that will take place this weekend on Saturday and Sunday, September 20-21 from 11-6pm.
This marks the 28th anniversary of the South End Open Studios. Over the years this event has grown and now it includes 12 major buildings and the works of more than 200 established and emerging artists who focus on a variety of mediums including multimedia, painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics and more.
If you don’t have plans this weekend, consider coming into the South End to walk through and see some of these working artists in their studios. You can get more information about this free event that is open to the public by linking here.

Boston’s Fall Artweek (September 26 – October 5) updated their website last week. This week encourages people to explore art through out Boston and rediscover your artsy side.
Artweek includes more than 70 free, unique and affordable events as varied as the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival on September 27, The Art of the Cocktail: The Labor of Liquor on October 1 and a Writing workshop with GrubStreet on October 4.

Original Dewey Square Mural by Brazilian artists Os Gemeos
Three weeks from today on Tuesday, September 23rd a new mural will grace Dewey Square. Murals on this sizable wall (70′ x 76′ ) has raised eyebrows in the past (like Os Gemeos mural shown). The current installation by Matthew Ritchie entitled Salt and Light is coming down and will be replaced by Shinique Smith abstract.
Smith is currently being featured at a MFA exhibit has said she will use her work, Seven Moons, as her inspiration. I’m looking forward to the new installation which is far more bold and colorful than the outgoing mural which I never really connected.
Every week there are free activities that are great for dates or just going out on your own. Break your routine and take advantage of what Boston has to offer. Here are a few fun activities that will fit any budget and offer you an opportunity to get out and see something new.
Every Wednesday, starting at 4PM Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) is free. BoA card holders also have free admission the first full weekend of every month.
Every Thursday, Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is free to the public after 5:00 PM.
The first Friday of each month is the South End First Fridays. More than 60 participating artists open their studios for this monthly event at 450 Harrison Avenue. Also check out one of my favorite galleries, Boston Sculptors Gallery, at 486 Harrison Avenue.
