Gallows owners eye Hamersley’s space for new restaurant

Rebecca Roth GulloEarlier this week I wrote a quick post about a whisper campaign regarding who was moving into Hamersley’s restaurant after it closes next month.  Those whispers were apparently credible. Today, Eater Boston published Rebecca Roth Gullo of The Gallows will open a new restaurant there in early January 2015.

According to the Eater article, Hamersley’s is seeking to transfer its license to an RRG, LLC with Seth Yaffe listed as the manager. RRG (most likley is Rebecca Roth Gullo) and Seth Yaffe is The Gallows’ GM.  I’m very happy for Rebecca and her team. She has a great track record of opening successful businesses here in the South End.

South End restaurant rumors: Hamersley’s

Hamersleys Bistro South End BostonSomething I really like but never expected from this blog is people proactively reaching out to tell me about new businesses opening and old businesses closing.  I often refer to these tips as “whispers” because they are usually shared as such when I’m out and about.

I’m going out on a limb here and asking for more info

A whisper campaign seems to be in full swing with different people who don’t know each other whispering who is going into Hamersley’s space after it closes in October.  The problem is the name mentioned over and over again doesn’t make sense.

So I’ve decided to ask those of you who have been whispering (you know who you are) if you would email me with more information. What did you see? Who told you? Give me something in writing.

Cafe Madeleine in South End is open

South End Boston CafeYesterday, Cafe Madeleine opened at 517 Columbus Avenue in the South End. Their menu includes pastries (with several varieties of croissants), chocolate treats (think mousse, cake and other treats) as well as more nutritious luncheon options like salads, sandwiches and quiche.

Give this new South End cafe a try and let me know what you think.

Food trucks come to South End’s Franklin Square

Boston announces 15 new food truck locationsBoston StrEATS rolled into the South End’s Franklin Square last Thursday as part of a weekly evening food truck program that is designed to bring people out to Boston parks.

Boston StrEATS each Thursday 5-9 p.m. at Franklin Sq.

The free event will feature eight food trucks and live music from 5 – 9 p.m. and will hopefully bring more people over to Franklin Square; often overlooked by South End residents in favor of the neighboring Blackstone Square on Washington Street.

Boston StrEATS plans to bring different food trucks each Thursday through the fall for as long as the weather permits.

Jordan Lofts at 477-481 Harrison Avenue

Jordan Lofts Building South EndMy previous blog post about Jordan Lofts on Harrison Avenue in the South End got a lot of attention so I asked a friend to introduce me to the developer, John Holland, from Holland Development, LLC.

John Holland told me that Jordan Lofts would be a mix of condominiums and rentals; condos on fourth and fifth floors and rentals on first, second and third floors.

Don’t be deceived by the use of “lofts” since there are varying floor plans. The commercial space is approximately 4,700 square feet and they are working with a local daycare provider, but the space is zoned general commercial so it could be an office, retail, restaurant or gallery. My preference would be for retail, restaurant or gallery.

The building is scheduled to open at the end of next summer.  Pricing for the rentals and sales are still being determined – the website will be updated when that information is available.

Bounce public art at BCA Plaza

Liz NofzigerDespite all the gentrification in the South End, I love that a strong arts community remains.  I firmly believe that the soul of the South End is tied to the fate of the artists who live and or work in this neighborhood. Their personality is still present despite the million dollar condos that seem to be for sale everywhere.

A great example of this is the current public art display in the BCA Plaza by Liz Nofziger entitled Bounce. BCA resident artist, Nofziger, has installed three conjoined ping-pong tables that are custom engineered to form an over sized ‘communal’ ping pong court. The public is encouraged to play – paddles and balls are available to all.

Hamersley’s Bistro to close

Gordon Hamersley at Taste of the South End

Gordon Hamersley at Taste of the South End

Holy crap! Gordon Hamersley, a James Beard Award winner and one of Boston’s most celebrated chefs, has announced that he will close his restaurant after opening twenty-seven years ago in Boston’s South End.

Gordon told The Boston Globe’s Devra First that he wants to spend more time to focus on his follow-up book to Bistro Cooking at Home and to continue to mentor young chefs.  An undisclosed new owner has already claimed the space and license, and will renovate and re-open a new concept at the beginning of 2015.  Full story here.

South End rumor: Tenant signed in former Francesca’s space

gossipRumor has it that Fred Kiley (the owner of the building that once housed Francesca’s) has signed a lease with a new tenant for the prime space on Tremont Street.

According to the neighborhood gossip, the space will remain a coffee shop and include outdoor seating.  The new tenant is not Peets coffee but I’ve not been able to get any further details regarding who signed the lease or an expected opening.  If you happen to have any further information, contact me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Jordan Lofts in South End

Holland ConstructionJordan Lofts on Harrison Avenue was pitched as a new residential development to the BRA a couple years ago.  Last year the project received board approval to create 18 condominium units and 20 parking spaces. Construction has been underway since the spring.

Unlike other projects in the neighborhood there is virtually no news about Jordan Lofts. Their website still promises a 2012 opening; let’s hope the developer, Holland Construction, pays more attention to detail on the condominiums than they’ve shown their website.

Does anyone know what is happening with Jordan Lofts? When the condominiums are expected to come on the market and their price range? A commercial space appears on the ground floor and any information about that would also be of interest to me.

Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe in South End to reopen

South End Charlie's Sandwich ShoppeWCVB-TV News is reporting that Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe on Columbus Avenue is reopening after it closed in June after almost 90 years in business.

The report indicates that a chef who runs Stella will bring the neighborhood favorite back some time next year.  According to WCVB the menu will remain unchanged.

So far there has been no updates on the famed restaurant’s Twittah handle, @TurkeyHash but yours truly will be keeping an eye on the account for anymore news.

Much thanks to Rich Caswell for the tip.

Cafe Madeleine to open in South End

South End Boston CafeAs  rumors circulate that Peet’s Coffee will not open on Tremont Street, Cafe Madeleine announces their imminent opening on Columbus Avenue. South End residents will have noticed that the space formerly occupied by Amsterdam Cafe at 517 Columbus Avenue has recently seen new signage for Cafe Madeleine as well as a handwritten “Now Hiring” sign for Front of House positions at the soon to open cafe.

A press release distributed this week indicates that the new cafe will open before the end of the month.  I peeked into the space this weekend and the space looks very inviting with a clean ivory interior that has grey and black accents. According to the release the cafe menu will include pastries as well as a small luncheon menu including salads, sandwiches, and quiche.

Cafe Madeleine will be open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

South End restaurant buzz: BoMA to become The Elephant Walk

Spreading the wordFor all of you curious to find out what will happen next now that BoMA Restaurant & Lounge has closed.  Yesterday I spoke with the owner and earlier today he shared via email that The Elephant Walk, a French / Cambodian restaurant will move into the space.

“After two years of owning and operating BoMA Restaurant & Lounge in the South End, I am pleased to announce my collaboration with Nadsa de Monteiro and Richard Pile, respectively the Executive Chef and Managing Partner of The Elephant Walk. They will be bringing their restaurant to the South End.  Yes, The Elephant Walk will open at the former BoMA location!

This will all move quickly with an eye on opening the restaurant in the Fall, aiming for October.” –Shane Manfred

Back in April it was reported in the BBJ that the restaurant would likely be displaced due to a $16 million apartment building project.  So Audubon Circle’s loss is the South End’s gain.  Check out The Elephant Walk’s French / Cambodian restaurant menu here.

closed: BoMA Bar & Restaurant

BoMa SignA couple of local blogs are reporting that the South End restaurant, BoMA, which first opened less than two years ago has closed.

I have reached out to staff and the owner for confirmation but have not heard back.  The restaurant’s Facebook Page appears to have been removed.  I really like the staff and the neighborhood vibe of the place. I wonder if the restaurant will reopen with a new concept and name under the same ownership or if it has been shuttered for good.  Either way I hope the staff are okay and the space can reopen soon.

New South End residential building: Factory at 46 Wareham

Factory at Wareham Street, Boston

The Boston Herald reports that a new residential development will be coming to 46 Wareham Street in the South End.  A three-story 19th century warehouse will be converted into a six story residential building that will have 42 units, a 9,400 square foot retail space and 50+ underground parking spaces. The new residential building will be called Factory at 46 Wareham.  The article didn’t indicate if the units would be apartments or condos.

Below is an image of the building as it stands today.Factory at 46 Wareham Street

This section of the South End currently has two large residential construction projects underway with the Ink Block and Troy Boston. Just two blocks from 46 Wareham The Cathedral of the Holy Cross has received board approval to build a new 120 unit building on a parking lot at 600 Harrison Avenue.

There are several other residential plans all within just a few blocks that are currently in various proposal stages. It will be interesting to see how these projects help reshape and revitalize this section of the South End which still has underutilized space in the form of partially vacated buildings and parking lots.
