Shakespeare on the Boston Common

Shakespeare on the Common King Lear 2015The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s 20th season of free Shakespeare on the Boston Common, presents one of the bard’s most famous tragedies, King Lear.

This tragedy tells the journey of an aging king, faced with his own mortality and mental decline, who tries to secure the legacy of his kingdom by dividing it amongst his three daughters. Only through loss—of status, love and loyalty—does King Lear learn what is truly resonant at the end of a life. Mark the dates in your calendar and plan on spending an evening on the Common to catch a performance.

Jennifer Coolidge returns to Boston

Nora Theatre CompanyNext month Boston-native, Jennifer Coolidge, who I first fell in love with when Reese Witherspoon taught her the Bend and Snap in Legally Blond will be coming to Boston (well Cambridge to be exact) to take to the Nora Theatre Company’s stage in Central Square to play a liberal atheist who’s meeting her daughter’s evangelical boyfriend in the play, Saving Kitty.

Saving Kitty opens on Thursday, July 9th and runs through Tuesday, August 2nd. For more information about the show or to purchase tickets link here.

Abandoned Steinert Theater may be renovated

steinert theaterLast June I wrote the post Wicked Cool: Boston’s very own phantom opera houseThe post was about a 650 person theater called Steinert Theater, which first opened in 1896 and was famous for its impeccable acoustics, but was forced to close after Boston’s tragic Coconut Grove fire in 1942.

Last week Boston Globe writer Steve Annear wrote an article indicating that the new owners of the building that houses Steinert Hall is contemplating renovating this theater which sits 35 feet below ground at 162 Boylston Street.

Developers say the project is complicated and could take 2-3 years to renovate. Long time Boston residents will remember the same rumblings back when the Boston Opera House and Modern Theatre – both on Washington Street – were first rumored to be renovated and reopened to the public. Let’s cross our fingers and hope this can happen.  If Steinert Theatre returns to its former glory it would join 9 other Theater houses in Boston’s Theater District including:

Boston Opera House
Colonial Theater
Charles Playhouse
Cutler Majestic Theatre
Modern Theatre at Suffolk
Paramount Theater
Shubert Theatre
Wang Center of Performing Arts
Wilbur Theatre

Ogunquit Playhouse presents Sister Act (May 20 – June 20)

Sister Act Ogunquit PlayhouseLast week the Ogunquit Playhouse opened their 83rd summer season with the popular musical, Sister Act, which will run through Saturday, June 20th.  The 2 hour and 30 minute show with one intermission has received strong reviews from local papers and feedback from friends who saw the show over the weekend has been positive.  Should you be planning a trip to Ogunquit in the coming weeks, I’d suggest you check out the production.  If you go, please let me know your thoughts as I won’t have the opportunity to see this production.

Lyric Stage Co presents Light Up The Sky

theater, comedyEarlier this week Boston’s Lyric Stage Company opened with their final show of the season, an hilarious backstage comedy with an all-star cast of Boston’s brightest and best comedians.  Set at the Ritz-Carlton Boston, Light Up the Sky is a backstage comedy about the colorful artists involved in breathing life into a Broadway-bound play and that moment of anticipation and terror just before an audience sees it for the very first time.  You will  meet the grand, charismatic leading lady, hopeful young playwright, high-strung director, boorish producer, and the leading lady’s eccentric mother.  Light Up the Sky runs from May 15 — June 13, 2015.  For more information about the show and to buy tickets, link here.

Be sure to see SpeakEasy Stage Company’s Mothers & Sons

SpeakEasy Stage Company, Boston, TheaterSpeakEasy Stage Company’s latest play is Terry McNally’s 2014 Tony Nominee for best play, Mothers & Sons.  The 1oo minute perfomance is powerfully touching and may be my favorite play this season from a Boston theater company.

This play is going to speak directly to the LGBT community in a powerful way as the rapid fire dialog between Katharine Gerard and her late son’s partner, Cal, verbally spar as they walk down a painful memory lane.  What separates this play from many that address AIDS is that it takes place in present day in Cal’s Manhattan apartment.  While Katharine Gerard retains many of her prejudices about homosexuality, she is forced to face how life has changed as she meets Cal’s husband Will Ogden and their inquisitive son, Bud. The show is filled with hilarious quips most often delivered by Katharine Gerard (played by Nancy Carroll).  My favorite is when she insists, “Andre wasn’t gay when he came to New York,” Lines like this are interspersed through out the show lightening moments and offering surprising chuckles.

Mothers & Sons opened last week and runs through June 6, 2015 – closing one week prior to Boston Pride.  I’d strongly recommend making this a date night with your significant other or with a band of your friends.  The play is touching and will evoke emotions for those enough to remember the AIDS Crisis and insight into that struggle for those born after it.
