Be proud Boston – Happy Pride

The 2019 Boston Pride parade is winding its way through the South End at the moment. The transformation of Boston Pride over the years is really amazing. In the early years, it can best be described as a political protest and statement to be seen and heard. Later it became an opportunity to celebrate our lives and advocate for AIDS funding. Now Boston Pride seems quite sedate with a mind-numbing stream of  schools, churches, companies and politicians marching, While many will bemoan the Pride of yore, from a civil rights perspective, what the LGBTQ community has accomplished over the past 50 years is amazing.

So even if we find ourselves in scary times and let’s face it, when the President of the US jokes that his Vice President, Mike Pence, “hates gays so much he’d like to hang them”  that qualifies as scary times — we should take great pride in the progress that has been made. There is still more to do so this week and always, be loud and be proud.

What to do this weekend: Boston Pride

Below are about 25 events and parties that will take place this weekend – the final weekend of Boston Pride. I hope you’ll make the most of the weekend and appreciate the support the LGBTQ community enjoys here in Massachusetts.

We should be proud of the gains the LGBTQ community has made over the past 50 years since Stonewall.  Work remains to be done, but for this weekend let’s celebrate who we are and who we love.

Celebrating Boston’s LGBTQ history

gay boston, gay clubs Boston’s own The History Project has joined forces with Boston Pride to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City, an action that helped launch the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

Starting this month, banners and posters have gone up around Boston and Cambridge on buildings where LGBTQ history was made. Think of it as Boston’s very own “Gay Freedom Trail”. The History Project has created an interactive map that describes each location’s connection to our city’s LGBTQ history to make it easier for you to follow along. I hope this becomes an annual tradition.

It is Boston Pride Week so I thought it appropriate to share this photo which was sent to me earlier this spring, depicting people marching in 1970 at one of Boston’s first pride parades. Following the Stonewall riots in NYC in the summer of 1969, the gay community in large cities around the US came together to flex their political muscle and make their voices heard.

These men and women paved the way for people like you and me and we are all in their debt. These are the people who I dedicate this weekly post. Their determination to live an authentic life inspires me and I hope they inspire you.
