Celebrating Boston’s LGBTQ history

gay boston, gay clubs Boston’s own The History Project has joined forces with Boston Pride to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City, an action that helped launch the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

Starting this month, banners and posters have gone up around Boston and Cambridge on buildings where LGBTQ history was made. Think of it as Boston’s very own “Gay Freedom Trail”. The History Project has created an interactive map that describes each location’s connection to our city’s LGBTQ history to make it easier for you to follow along. I hope this becomes an annual tradition.

It is Boston Pride Week so I thought it appropriate to share this photo which was sent to me earlier this spring, depicting people marching in 1970 at one of Boston’s first pride parades. Following the Stonewall riots in NYC in the summer of 1969, the gay community in large cities around the US came together to flex their political muscle and make their voices heard.

These men and women paved the way for people like you and me and we are all in their debt. These are the people who I dedicate this weekly post. Their determination to live an authentic life inspires me and I hope they inspire you.

Since it is Pride Week here in Boston, I thought I’d share this rather engaging photograph I snapped from a few years back at an earlier Boston Pride Week.  Hopefully the caption I’ve shared below inspires you to offer up a caption or two of your own. Leave a witty or funny caption as a comment for this post, and I’ll approve it for readers to enjoy.

If you haven’t any plans, come down and check out the first Kiki Beach of the season. The boys usually don’t get to the beach much before 12PM. Look for guys on M Street Beach just after the Community Center, first bus shelter to the right. gay boston, kiki beach

15 Years ago Massachusetts made history (again)

Gay marriage, same-sex marriage15 Years ago today Massachusetts became the first state in the United States to legalize same sex marriage. Conservatives said Mass. was making a mockery of marriage, yet this state still has one of the lowest divorce rates in the country.

To all those who helped bring about this change here in Massachusetts and elsewhere, congratulations. When Massachusetts legalized same sex marriage they set in motion and made possible the landmark Supreme Court case, Obergefell v Hodges. Make no mistake, same sex marriage would eventually have become legal even if , but I’m particularly proud of the role my home state played in forcing the issue. Below I’ve included an excerpt from that historic ruling, majority opinion that was written by State Supreme Court Justice, Margaret Marshall, which took place the year before. It still moves me today to read it.

Congratulations to all those couples celebrating their 15th anniversary.
