The photo is from 1980 San Francisco Pride. The first case of AIDS in the US would be reported one year later in June 1981, and life for these men and millions of others would never be the same again. Most of the U.S. would refuse to help, leaving tens of thousands to die afraid and alone. An unsympathetic America would see AIDS as “God’s will” and a way to “cleanse society”.

Here is a great photograph from the Castro in the 1980s I believe. The image is one of many from DJ Mag which posted a great article this past January entitled, It Takes A Village, People: Preserving San Francisco’s Gay Disco History.

I love this photo of two shirtless gay men in San Francisco. The fact that they look ripped isn’t lost on me either. Based on the cars in the background, I’d guess this dates back to the 1960s or 70s. WDYT?
