The unexpected review: Granary Tavern

The Granary TavernWhile perusing Boston.com earlier this week I noticed a review of the Granary Tavern, which opened earlier this year along the Greenway.  My other half is a lighting designer, and created the lighting design for the restaurant / bar so I was pleasantly surprised to read that while the food was panned, the lighting was noted and praised repeatedly.

The restaurant reviewer opens complimenting the lighting “You cannot beat the Granary Tavern for lighting. Walk in off the Rose Kennedy Greenway and you enter a warmly glowing space, one that when it’s crowded feels mellow yet energized, full of promise.”  Later, Boston Globe writer, Anne V. Nelson, writes about how the is bar perfectly lit.  Should you be interested in reading the full review you may link here.

Since I don’t have a hard copy of the review to tape to our refrigerator, I figured I’d use this space to say congratulations.

Happy birthday Dad

DadToday is my father’s birthday. Here is a photo from this past summer up on Lake Winnipesaukee.  Happy Birthday Dad.

Happy Thanksgiving Mom and Dad

Wishing all the best to my parents who are in New Hampshire celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday today, while I’m in Brazil.

When I think of what I’m most thankful for my list always starts with these two amazing individuals.

Happy Thanksgiving (from Brazil)

I wanted to acknowledge the Thanksgiving holiday which has always been a personal favorite of mine. In recent years I have used the time off to travel abroad and visit new places. This year is no exception. My partner and I find ourselves back in Brazil celebrating the day.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving eve

Since Thanksgiving is so widely celebrated and significant to Americans it makes me wonder why we don’t have “Thanksgiving Eve”.   After all, we have Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and any American will tell you Thanksgiving ranks right up there with those holidays; many actually will tell you they prefer Thanksgiving.

So even though it is not official, I’d like to wish those who celebrate this holiday a very happy Thanksgiving eve.

Safe Travels

Are babies born naked?

Periodically, my sister emails me conversations she has with her kids.  Last week she sent the following email:

AUSTIN:  Mommy, when you’re born are you naked or do you have clothes on?

MOM: Naked, Austin. Everyone is naked when they are first born.

AUSTIN:  Giggle. Giggle… Isn’t it so funny that everyone is born naked? Is it awkward?

A day at Fenway

Last weekend I made what is likely my final visit to Fenway Park since the Red Sox season has been more than disappointing and will conclude at the end of this month. It was easy to forget about their abysmal season since I was accompanied by my two nephews and brother. Boston GuyThat’s my brother far left followed by Jack and Austin.  It is hard to say what was their favorite part of the day: the game, the food, or the play ground afterward.   My favorite moment was when my nephew, Jack, told his younger brother, Austin, “when you go to middle school the playgrounds are just grass and you have to learn to deal with it, because life is hard.”

BosGuy and the nephews

BosGuyTwo weeks ago today I was hanging with my nephews (Austin on the left and Jack on the right). Summer has only just ended, and I want it back so I can have more days like this again.

Codzilla and the nephews

The definition of “uncle” should be parenting without any of the hang-ups, expenses or disciplining required.  Today I’m relishing in that role. Sergio and I are taking my two nephews Jack and Austin on Codzilla.

Codzilla is a large boat that has a giant, ravenous looking Cod painted along its side.  The ride will take us on a trip through Boston harbor for approximately 45 minutes at speeds of up to 40 mph. Seems like the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon with two boys age seven and nine. I can hardly wait to see their expressions.

Here is a recent photo of the three siblings.  Abby will sit out the boat ride with Mom.

Family wedding

This past weekend my younger brother was married on Cape Cod.  The wedding and reception was held by the beach in New Seabury, MA at the Popponesset Inn.  The property’s website does justice to how pretty the setting was for Timothy and Ashley – Popponesset Inn.

Click to enlarge the photos below which Sergio snapped of my younger brother and I just prior to the ceremony and during the wedding.

Devotion by Robert Frost

My brother is getting married later today so I thought I’d share a poem befitting the occasion.

Devotion

The heart can think of no devotion
Greater than being shore to ocean –
Holding the curve of one position,
Counting an endless repetition.

Devotion was written by American Poet, Robert Frost, and first published in 1928. I love the simplicity of this poem and the imagery he evokes to describe such a personal and intimate concept.

Congratulations Tim and Ashley

I’m down on Cape Cod to attend my little brother’s wedding, which is actually tomorrow afternoon.  I couldn’t be happier for them, and I’m looking forward to the celebration.  I love them both dearly.

Weekend at Lake Winnipesaukee

Four years ago my family built a second home on Lake Winnipesaukee just a few miles from the center of Wolfboro.  The house is large enough to comfortably accommodate everyone, which makes the home ideal for family gatherings like we had this past weekend.

The weather all weekend in central NH was beautiful with the exception of some brief rainfall that came through early in the evening on Saturday after we had spent the day at the beach and went for a ride on Dad’s new toy.  I spent the weekend relaxing with family and eating far too much.

Nephew’s letter to the toothfairy

BosGuyI spent the weekend with my family up at my parent’s lake house in NH and my nephew Jack is at that age where he is losing his ‘baby’ teeth.  As it happened, he had pulled one of his teeth while at the lake this weekend and before heading to bed he left the tooth fairy a letter suggesting that he would very much enjoy a Pokemon deck of cards.
