Fitness update

I’ve been working out with my trainer, Kris, for a few weeks and he suggested I record everything I consume so he could review my diet.  I would like to think that I have a fairly healthy diet, but recording everything I ate and drank was eye opening.  First, it confirmed that I eat a lot.  Second, with the amount of coffee I drink you would think it is its own food group.  Third, wine and martinis are my drinks of choice.  However, it was not all bad news, it was satisfying to see I had a fair amount of protein (more than I would have anticipated).

My personal fitness goals really do not include a desire to lose weight as much as it is to tighten my stomach and build more strength in my chest, back, shoulders and arms. Who knows what is possible? I’m nearly 42 and do not intend on making significant dietary changes, but with Kris’ guidance and some modest retooling of my diet, I’d like to see what can happen over the next 8-10 weeks.

Are you currently working out or trying to get into a routine?

Fitness update: The new trainer

Last week I started working out with my new trainer, Kris.  It will probably take me a couple of months before our training sessions become routine and I can anticipate what he may have in store for me. For now, each work out is something a bit different and new.

Like my former trainer, he couples routines so one rep focuses on one muscle group and the next focuses on a secondary group. Thank goodness we take 30-second breaks after these back-to-back sets so I may catch my breathe.

We are still in the “honeymoon” stage; he’s figuring out what are my limits and structuring routines to push me and I’m trying to impress him by not gasping for air.  Although I miss my former trainer, Stu, I’m happy with the change and have faith that Kris is going to help me attain a higher level of fitness so I’ll be more comfortable when the warmer weather arrives.  Are you working out? Let’s chat and motivate each other.

Changing things up at the gym

It is the end of an era (sort of).  In February 2009 my partner gave me a  trial pack at my local gym to work out with a personal trainer.  That thoughtful gift resulted in a 3 year relationship with my personal trainer, Stew.  Long time readers will recognize his photo to the left.  His workouts still leave me winded and my last session with him this past Friday was killer, but after 3 years I’ve decided I need to mix things up and change my routine.

Starting today, I’m working out with a new trainer.  Kris shares a similar work out philosophy and both trainers know and respect each other so I feel like I’ll be in good hands.  However, not knowing what to expect has me a bit on edge. I’ll be sure to share more about my work out routine with my new trainer, Kris, in the coming weeks, but for now I wanted to recognize and say thank you to Stew for all his help.

New Year’s resolutions that aren’t losing weight

With many people using the start of the new year as an excuse to return to the gym and focus on personal fitness and their health in general, getting space to stretch or snagging a treadmill to run off that excess weight may prove difficult.  Additionally, sticking to those New Year’s resolutions can be tricky for many people.

The Huffington Post published a great article today entitled New Year’s Resolutions That Aren’t Losing Weight.  Some of the suggestions (if followed) probably would result in losing weight and living a healthier 2012.  Just pick 2-3 of the suggestions and see if you can make it part of your routine.

1  Prioritize Sleep – make it a point to get 7 – 9 hours each night

2  Improve Posture – this can help your joints and will ease muscle aches

3  Take Vacations – time away from work and having something to look forward to is key to your health

4  No Soda – everyone knows these are not good for you (even the no calorie diet sodas are bad for your health)

5  Breathe – take a few moments to take a few deep breathes; it’ll relax you

6  Stop Snacking – duh, this is just common sense

7  Wash Your Face – wash up before going to bed (esp. for those wearing make-up) your skin will thank you

8  Try Yoga – as few as 10 minutes a day will reduce stress and can help your posture (see #2 as to why this is a good thing)

9  Bike or Walk – make this a part of your routine each week

10  Sorry – only say it if you really mean it; words matter

Schweddy BosGuy

So here I sit dripping in sweat after returning from a quick run at the gym. Perhaps the dedication my partner has shown going to the gym these past few months is starting to influence me or perhaps I’m simply trying to offset all the extra cocktails and treats I’ve been enjoying. I’m not really questioning the logic, I’m just hoping that I don’t fall off this proverbial workout wagon.

I’m continuing to work out with my trainer Stew two times a week.  Earlier this fall I changed up my work out routine and decided every other Wednesday I would spend one hour on either back or chest – by the end of that hour I’m hurting (in a good way) and I can feel the effects for the next several days.  Every Friday I spend one hour on arms and core which leaves me tired and out of breathe. I’ve not seen any real change in my physique but I think I’m getting stronger.  Starting this week, I’ve thrown in a couple of cardio sessions.  Nothing serious – 30 to 45 minute runs, but it adds a bit more to the week and makes me feel better about myself.

I hope to stick with this thru next week too so I have a leg up on all the people who return to the gym starting Jan 1.  How about you? Have you been working out?  Do you have any personal fitness goals?

Time to focus on fitness

It has been awhile since I’ve talked about my fitness and work out regimen and with the holiday season set to go into overdrive next week here in the United States, it seems like an appropriate moment to bring it up (again).

My job and the weather tend to greatly influence my commitment to the gym, which is really dumb when you consider its a combination of vanity and genuine interest in my own personal health that is the reason I work out.  However, September through the Thanksgiving holiday is terribly hectic as is the new year and much of spring.  Couple that with the fact that it is downright freezing in Boston and suddenly previously considered lame excuses not to go to the gym sound legit.  The days of when I would barely visit a gym in a month are long gone thanks to the fact that I work out with a trainer whom I do my best to see two times a week, but I need to get my butt in gear so I’m going to the gym on those off-days when Stu (my trainer – depicted at the start of the post) isn’t there pushing me.  Anyone else struggling with their gym routine?  Any gym rats out there who would like to provide  some pearls of wisdom on how you stay so focused despite all the distractions?

BosGuy has fallen off the fitness wagon

I recently realized in 4 weeks it will be Thanksgiving and in 8 weeks it will be Christmas.  (((AARGH!!!))) Lately I’ve been very frustrated with both my inability to get to the gym and the amount I’ve been eating.  Realizing that the holiday season is fast approaching is enough to make me lose it entirely, say “I give up” and order a half dozen pain au chocolats

Fortunately I have a good trainer who can work with me but the trick is scheduling the sessions and getting my butt to the gym between our ‘gym dates’.  I try to remind myself that President Obama supposedly works out for an hour every day (for some reason that always ticks me off rather than motivates me).

I suppose the point of this post was to acknowledge I’ve fallen off the fitness wagon and hope this post will be the kick in the pants I need to get back on track.  Of course, I’ve added some eye candy to feed my personal insecurities and visually stimulate me into delusions of “I can look like that too.”  Anyone else getting frustrated with themselves? It seems like everyone I know is a fitness freak and I’m the only one craving a donut and my couch.

Boston shines

September in Boston was absolutely gorgeous and it seems as if October must be a bit jealous trying to out shine what September delivered.  The city reached the mid-80s for the third day in a row, and the beautiful weather comes  on the heels of more than a week of warm weather and sunny days leading up to the Columbus Day weekend.   The unseasonably warm weather will end starting tomorrow if we are to believe the forecast so make the most of this absolutely gorgeous day.  Al fresco dining tonight anyone?

UPDATE: It was so damn gawjus I succumbed and went for a run along the esplanade.  4.5 miles in <40 minutes – not great but not half bad for an old fart like myself.

MA residents have most gym memberships

More Massachusetts residents have gym memberships than any other state according to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association.  The survey found that one out of four MA residents belonged to a health club last year.

Here’s a breakdown of the most popular gym activities based on the survey results.  Treadmills 44%; Weight machines 43%; Hand weights 35%; Elliptical trainer 32%; Stationary bike 32%.

Its not exactly clear if having a gym membership translates into going to the gym but having a membership is certainly a step in the right direction.  So in light of this recent article I’m curious, do you have a gym membership and if so where do you live? If you don’t have a membership, do you work out on your own or when you hear the word “gym” do you automatically think “Jim”?
