Movember

Early in November I wrote about how November is Lung Cancer awareness month.  If you didn’t read the post, please check it out here.

This past month you may have noticed more men sporting a mustache and secretly thought to yourself “Since when did the 70’s porn look come back into style?” Although I won’t speak for all the guys, many had grown a mustache for something called Movember.  Each year November (or rather Movember) thousands of men grow mustaches as a way to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

Even if you didn’t grow a mustache for Movember you can still contribute financially by visiting the site here.

I didn’t participate mostly because my face cannot grow a mustache (I can barely generate a 5 o’clock shadow after a few days), but here are some pictures of friends who did.

November is lung cancer awareness month

More people die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer

So I’m saying WTF? (Where’s the funding?)

In 2007, 200,000+ people were diagnosed with lung cancer and nearly 160,000 died from it (and that’s just in the US). Despite the fact lung cancer is so lethal and prevalent, funding and awareness remains pitifully low.  At this point in my life, I remain largely unaffected by lung cancer (thank goodness), but many others are not nearly as fortunate.

Did you know?

  • Lung cancer takes more lives then breast, prostate, colon and pancreatic cancers combined.
  • Non-smoking women are the fastest growing lung cancer population.

I don’t often use my blog as a bully pulpit, but I’d really appreciate it if my US readers would give pause to an initiative that is the brain child of a woman named Diane Daniels Legg.  Diane is working fervently to get more US Senators and Representatives to sign onto the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction (S.752 inthe senate and H.R. 1394 in the House of Representatives). This Act was introduced in both the Senate and House, and it calls for a comprehensive research plan addressing all aspects of lung cancer.

Learn more by visiting the Lung Cancer Advocacy Alliance and contact your elected representative to ask them to help fund the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction (S.752 inthe senate and H.R. 1394 in the House of Representatives).

This post is dedicated to Diane Legg and Terry O’Brien and in memory of Helen Panter who passed away from lung cancer in 2006.

Adele in Boston for throat surgery

Twenty-three year old singing sensation, Adele, has been spotted around Boston quite a bit lately, dining out with friends at Red Lantern most recently.  She will be undergoing surgery for what The Boston Globe describes as “an increasingly common throat ailment”.  Let’s hope this gifted singer and song writer will make a speedy recovery and will be better able to take care of her throat by kicking her smoking habit which can’t be helping although is not necessarily related to the  hemorrhaging, which has caused her to cancel tours and now seek medical attention from Dr. Steven Zeitels.

Want to read more about what is ailing Adele and this increasingly common throat ailment? You can read the full story here.

Sick BosGuy

My Friday night plans to visit Emporio Armani for their party then dash over to the GLAD “Spirit of Justice Awards” which I described in my Fancy BosGuy post never materialized because of a self-inflicted wound that kept me home and down for the count.

On Friday afternoon I was ravenous but didn’t have the time to go and grab lunch so I made a quick sandwich from whatever I was able to find in my refrigerator (I work from my house), but unfortunately the sandwich meat I used must have spoiled because within a few hours I was defying the laws of physics and frankly grossing myself out as my stomach went to war with the food I ingested.  I’m happy to report that 48-hours later I’m feeling much better.

Free medical advice

I’m no doctor but a healthy attitude, which includes laughter and smiles can go a long way; not to mention it makes life for you and those around you so much more pleasant.

Your Man: Free app for early detection of breast cancer

My friend David over at WGB posted this video which serves as both a public service announcement and a bit of eye candy / comic relief.  The video is a reminder that breast cancer is a serious subject and by following the videos guidelines TLC  (Touch, Look & Check) women can help with early detection.

The video goes one step further promoting a fun app you can download on your iPhone (an app for Android phones will be available starting next week) to help remind you to do this sort of thing on a regular basis.  Check out the gratuitous male booty and the cute role-call that follows the visually engaging video.

You can download the “Your Man” iPhone app here.
