SoWa Boston First Friday

SoWa First FridayThe first Friday of each month the SoWa Artist Guild hosts something called “First Fridays” where participating artists in the SoWa Arts District open their studios at 450 Harrison Avenue from 5PM – 9PM.

If you are looking to do something different this weekend check out First Friday. This is a great date option as well as an opportunity to spend a couple hours with friends.  After perusing a few galleries and studios walk over to one of the many great restaurants in SoWa.  If you need any recommendations, feel free to reach out to me by leaving a comment or emailing me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Diseño moves and Phillipostyle Hair Studio opens

If it has been a while since you strolled down Harrison Avenue, then be prepared to see some changes if you plan on coming over this way for the First Friday, Art Walk or opening of SoWa Open Market – all happening this weekend.

diseno bostonDiseño bos a SoWa retailer that first opened in the spring of 2007 has moved from their digs at 409 Harrison Avenue and reopened at 460B Harrison Avenue, in the Thayer Street courtyard and pedestrian walkway. For those not familiar, Diseño bos is a purveyor of furniture and home decor accessories from Latin and South America. The shop provides a nice compliment to the Asian influences and design pieces found next door at Mohr & McPherson.

Check out the new digs and while there congratulate the owner, Frank Campanale, on recently celebrating seven years with Diseño bos.

PhillipoStyle SalonPhilippoStyle is looking to open this week in space that was previously used as a pop up store last summer by Mitchell Gold Furniture at 485 Harrison Avenue. Owner Phillipo Caporrella is using the large space for his hair salon and spa that will offer maincure, pedicure, massage and have a small space set aside to sell clothes and accessories.

Unique destination shops like Frank’s, Diseño bos, and Philippo’s, PhillipoStyle, make our neighborhood distinctive and a destination. We need to champion these small businesses by visiting them and supporting them so stop by this weekend and say hello.

South End’s latest development: Troy Boston

Troy Boston South EndThe construction at 275 Albany Street between Traveler and Berkeley Street now has a name and will be called Troy Boston.

The two residential towers will have nearly 400 units (it is still unclear if they will be apartments or condos), a garage with 180 spaces and 6,000 square feet of retail space.  It will be interesting to see how this little corner of SoWa in the South End is transformed as the much larger complex “Ink Block” opens across the street from Troy Boston.

Street art on Harrison Avenue

Tyson Andree South End MuralTyson Andree is a local graffiti street artist who has turned his talents to producing fine art.  Some of his new creations have been on view at the South End Adelson Gallery in Boston since early March.  Although his show, The Process works on glass, closes this Sunday, April 20th, his work will continue to be on display across the street from the gallery.

Before: 471 Harrison Avenue

Before: 471 Harrison Avenue

Over the past couple of weeks SoWa residents may have seen Tyson painting graffiti art on the backside of EG Leon & Company’s one story commercial building at 471 Harrison Avenue. No matter what you make of Tyson Andree’s street art I’m sure everyone agrees it is a welcome addition, masking an otherwise ugly concrete one-story facade.

New renderings of Boston’s Ink Block

Herald Building SoWaI stumbled upon a couple of really nice renderings of the Ink Block – a large, mixed use development just blocks from my home in Boston’s South End.  I believe this photograph is a rendering of what the corner of Harrison Avenue and Traveler Street will look like when the development is done. Below I snagged an image of the former Boston Herald building (courtesy of Google Maps) that the Ink Block is being built upon.  Under the former Herald building is an aerial view of the entire project. Seeing these images makes me very excited. When done, retail and commercial space as well as a couple hundred apartments and condos will replace what had previously been under used and mostly vacant space.

600 Harrison Avenue moves forward

600 Harrison AvenueThe Cathedral of the Holy Cross which owns the parking lot at 600 Harrison Avenue has leased development rights to allow for 160 apartments (with 21 affordable units and 3,600 square feet of retail or restaurant space) as well as enough underground parking to accommodate the Cathedral’s existing 79 spaces and more for residents.

More Details about 600 Harrison Avenue Project

While board approval awaits, there has been little push back from the community. Hopefully this will greenlight the project and move it forward.

Phillipostyle opening at 520 Harrison Avenue

phillipostyleVacant space at 520 Harrison Avenue in the South End (most recently used by Mitchell Gold as a pop up store) is being converted into a trendy new home for Phillipostyle.  According to the signage outside, the new home will operate as a hair salon and day spa providing manicures, pedicures and massages.

I’m happy to see a new business coming into this space but based on the amount of work that still needs to be done, it appears that Phillipostyle is still several weeks away from opening.  I tried calling the number they provide outside for details (857) 362-7410 but never heard back from them.

Last week I wrote about another South End residential construction project that has been proposed and is currently being reviewed at 345 Harrison Avenue in my post, South End Residential Construction Boom.

This week I noticed a rather cool map Boston.com has created that pins current and proposed residential construction projects in the South End. If you are curious to see what has been proposed and learn more about these projects you should definitely bookmark, Boston Redevelopment Authority: Development Projects.  However, the Boston.com site offers a cool view of projects (large and small) with before and after pictures that is worth checking out, Boston.com Interactive South End Residential Construction Map.

SOWA Holiday market this weekend

sowa holiday market 2013The 10th annual SoWA Holiday Market is this weekend (December 14th and 15th) from 12pm-6pm at the Ben Franklin Institute (41 Berkeley Street) in the South End; although strangely not in SOWA.

Come down to do some holiday shopping or just to check things out.  There is a $5 admission to get in and peruse all the independent designers, artists and crafters displaying their wares.

GQB and First Friday

Guerrilla Queer BarI’m still in sunny, warm Brazil, but I wanted to get this post up for those of you contemplating what to do tomorrow night.

Open to doing  something different? The first Friday of each month Boston Guerrilla Queer Bar (GQB) overtake traditionally straight bars.  Since the Boston bar scene can be restricting, GQB gives you the opportunity to break out of your routine. Curious which bar will be overtaken on Friday? Check the group’s Facebook page or its website, www.BostonGuerrilla.com.

Is the bar scene not really your thing? Looking for something to do that won’t break the bank? Come over to my neighborhood in Boston’s South End to participate in First Friday. This event which runs from 5:00pm – 9:00pm at 450 Harrison Avenue allows you to walk through the many working art studios, view art and artisan crafts and chat with the artists. Its a great way to mingle and meet people and after you are done, there are literally a half dozen restaurant options within 2-3 blocks to either grab dinner or enjoy some apps and cocktails.

SoWa ManSwap Sunday

SoWa Open MarketManSwap returns to the SoWa Open Market this Sunday. Guys bring your gently used clothing and accessories, for each item you bring you’ll get a swap ticket to exchange for another item.

South End rumor mill: Immaculate Conception and Sibling Rivalry

GTI PropertiesThe South End rumor mill is grinding fast and furious these days.  Earlier this year SoWa Boston confirmed GTI Properties purchased the Jesuit Urban Center and the Immaculate Conception Church on Harrison Avenue.  Unconfirmed reports suggest that GTI Properties plans to convert these two 19th century structures into 80 apartments.

In addition to news about GTI Properties latest development, rumor has it that a Mexican restaurant will soon be opening in the space formerly occupied by Sibling Rivalry on Tremont Street in the South End.

sibling-rivalry

At this point, this is only an unconfirmed rumor but it is one that I’ve now heard from two different restaurant owners in the South End. Questions remain who may be behind the new restaurant, but if it is true this extends a streak of Mexican restaurants opening in Boston that I thought had run its course.  This would be the first second (sorry El Centro!) Mexican restaurant to open in the South End and be just two blocks from Masa, a southwest bar and grill. If the rumors prove true, the new restaurant could give both El Centro and Masa a run for their money.

SoWa Open Market reopens today

SoWa Open Market Opening Day

The SoWa Open Market has returned this weekend after a winter hiatus.  This year’s market has expanded and now includes 110 indie designers and artists at 460 Harrison Avenue; more than 75 specialty food and farm vendors at 500 Harrison Avenue; and 30 food trucks serving up all sorts of good eats at 540 Harrison Avenue.  The market will run every Sunday from 10am – 4pm through the end of October.

SoWa Art Walk Sunday

PrintThe city of Boston has so many events going on Sunday one’s head could spin trying to see and do everything.  However, if you end up in or near the South End, in addition to the Oyster Festival and the SoWa Open Market, from 11AM to 6PM on Sunday is the SoWa Art Walk. If you’ve never attended, come down and check it out; support the local art scene – I think you’ll be impressed.
